Property Description

The Nunnery serves up the freshness of modern-day Melbourne with a side helping of 19th-century charm. What's the name about, you ask? Well, our Georgian building was built in 1888 and was an actual nunnery for 60 years. Now we're a small, unique, friendly hostel in the heart of Fitzroy. The Nuns (our staff) are all local Melbournians who can direct you to their favourite hotspots in town and help you with any questions about the hostel.

Fitzroy is Melbourne's hipster hub, which means you only need to pop around the corner to find plenty of bars and shops. It'll take you 2 minutes to walk to Brunswick Street, and Melbourne Museum and Carlton Gardens are just across the road. We're on the main tram route, 96, but you can walk into the city centre in just over 10 minutes. From Tullamarine Airport take the Skybus to Southern cross station, from there we are about 20 minutes on the 96 tram.

Rooms and Dorms
Whatever your budget, we've got mixed, female-only dorms and private rooms to suit.

Extras and activities
Free WiFi.
We also have hair dryers, straighteners, myki cards and sporting equipment to rent, just leave some ID.

The Nunnery was awesome! We had a late check in and an early check out and the staff were super awesome about helping us out with that. Everything was clean and cosy, friendly atmosphere. One of our party accidentally deactivated their keycard at 1am and couldn't get into the room, but the staff were able to get them a new keycard sorted very quickly. We would love to be back again!

Great location in Fitzroy, so close to everything and right next to the tram stop. We stayed in a private room and there were plenty of bathrooms available. Check in after hours was really easy and staff were so friendly. Highly recommend :)

Amazing staff and great atmosphere! I would definitely recommend to other solo travellers as everyone is so friendly and the cosy living room makes it easy to meet people. The staff are also super lovely n helpful and the location is prime in Fitzroy with so many bars n restaurants nearby n easy tube access. Only downside is its not the cleanest (the shower in out bathroom didn't work n leaked n smelt) and the kitchen it pretty small. But I would 100% stay again

    Very Good

Great location. I would have enjoyed my stay if it wasn't that there is NO mesures to prevent Covid from spreading. No masks, no distanciation while a lot of guests were coughing. I moved after one night and didn't spend much time inside.

The bathrooms were really dirty, I stayed four nights and they never seem to clean them. The rug in the room was also dirty. Nice stuff and good location, next to Brunswick street where you can find cool cafes, shops, bars. But I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. :(

I didn't have the best of the experiences in this hostel. Booked for 3 days but let on the second. The location is great, and that's the only positive thing. The building is old, with rooms that are super small and too cold. The facilities were ok. Some of the staff members were unfriendly, specifically the guy that was dressed all as white. They advertised here and on its page that there was breakfast every morning, but they stopped doing that after covid, however they never mentioned that.

The Nunnery says

I think what makes us extra special is the extras we offer our guests.Free events all week like movie night on Tuesdays, homemade soup on Wednesdays, pub crawls on Thursdays and wine and nibbles or BBQ on Fridays.
We really aim to offer a unique experience; after all, our hostel was built in 1888 and for 60 years used to be an actual nunnery! We take pride in helping our guests enjoy the very best Melbourne has to offer.
The nearest main attractions are the Melbourne Museum and Melbourne Exhibition centre; personally, I recommend guests check out the bars, cafes and restaurants around nearby Brunswick Street and Smith Street. Jacqui, Assistant Manager
