Overview

With its on-site traditional pub (stocked with English real ales) and a Union Jack flag, The Walrus Hostel has a proper Cool Britannia feel – so it's just the spot for getting a taste of London. You'll have free Wi-Fi for planning your routes to the sights, or grab one of our free city maps if your overseas data plan's pricey. There's a free breakfast, including fresh orange juice and Marmite – a British classic – to keep you going till lunchtime, and a kitchen for whipping up dinner with your new travel buddies.

Location

We're in a really central location about a 10-minute walk from Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. You can stroll to London Waterloo station in 6 minutes to catch a train or underground to check out Oxford Street's shops. Waterloo is also where you'll arrive if you're taking the train from Gatwick Airport – just change at Clapham Junction and you'll be here in less than an hour. We've also got bike hire if you fancy cycling along the Thames – the riverfront is 5 minutes away.

Rooms and Dorms

There are mixed and female-only dorms, with linen included and towels for hire. You'll have your own security locker to pop your backpack in, and there are shared bathrooms with hot showers on every floor. There's also a private room if you prefer to have your own space.

Extras and activities

You can borrow an adaptor from the bar for a deposit if you've forgotten to pack yours, and pick up a novel from the book exchange for downtime. Ask staff for extras like earplugs as well – great if you need a nap after a late night making the most of our happy hour or themed drink nights (did someone say Mojito Mondays?). To keep your passport secure, we've got a safe manned by the staff. There's a luggage room for stashing your suitcase after check-out, too.

    Superb

My first hostel stay so I was a bit nervous to stay but from the first interaction to check out the Walrus Hostel blew my expectations out of the water. Such a comforting atmosphere, the staff was lovely, the beds were nice (with white linen for peace of mind), the bathrooms were better than my flats, and the location could not be beat! The only downside (which wasn’t a downside for me) I could see for people is that the trains for Waterloo station rumble and squeak last all night long.

Really great hostel, the breakfast is really good with many options, the ubication is perfect and the staff is very helpful. The only thing is you need to feel a lot of silence for sleep, the noise of the train could be a problem.

The stuff was very helpful and friendly. The location is very central, walking distance to Big Ben and London Eye. Bus station is just front of the hostel and the metro stations are only couple of minutes away. In general I enjoyed my stay here, only negative thing I could say is, I was the only one in the room stayed there for 4 nights. Everyone else stayed only one night, so I've woken up every morning at different times with the noise of someone's packing.

Excellent located hostel, close to the Big Ben and subway and Waterloo statrion. Nice pub atmosphere, good breakfast, so defenitely recommendable. Perhaps one minor min point: no hooks in the showerroom to hang up your towl and clothes. But overall, value for money and great atmosphere.

    Fabulous

Great location and close to everything. Bus/train stops are very close. Staff is lovely and helpful. Breakfast is fantastic. Tons of restaurants nearby. However, building has no elevator so climbing 4 flights of stairs after a long day sucks. The toilets/showers were gross and subpar at best. The beds were uncomfortable. Depending on what you’re looking for in a hostel this place could be great or terrible. I’m truly torn because there were things I liked and things I did not.

Staff was great always there to help if you had any questions! The bar was beautiful and fun to hang out at. Definitely a great place to stay in London all around and it’s fairly close to all the tourist attractions in the area.

An ensuite means a toilet and a shower! Not just a shower.. I m sure if I missed it.. but everywhere else.. that's what it means.

Positives: Good location. Very friendly staff. Bar area is good for relaxing. Negatives: Too many people coming and going at all times of the night. People allowed to smoke in the building, including cannabis. Broken showers, missing lights.

Hostel consists of a couple of cramped rooms above a grotty bar. Toilets are very dirty and there is only 1 working toilet for a 22 bed dorm, and it isn’t even in the dorm room. Kitchen is okay but the dining table seats max 2 and is in the corner of the kitchen squished against the oven. There is no social space but the bar which seemed to be used more by locals than guests. (The owner?) has a very poor manner and should not be customer facing. Sorry but will not return.

This is a party hostel. But if you party in the bar downstairs or anywhere for the matter, beware that you might have a room on the fourth floor and they do not have a lift. The toilets and shower rooms were very dirty, and looked like they haven’t been cleaned in quite some time. All the rooms do not have a charging socket near the bed. Extension boards are available at the reception but there may not be empty sockets to connect in the room. The ladies in the reception are very helpful though.
