Hostelworld says

Wake Up! Sydney voted 'Best Hostel in Australia' & '5 Best Extra-Large Hostel Worldwide' at the 2020 Hostelworld HOSCAR Awards and it's no wonder - this hostel is located just next to the Central Station, near Paddy's Market and Chinatown and a short walk from Darling Harbour. Travellers tell us they appreciate the hostel's 'very engaging community', with staff who 'are super friendly and go out of their way to accommodate you', hosting parties and events every day. We like their attention to little details, providing rare extras such as an on-site ATM as well as hooks and shelves in the showers.

Overview

Bright, buzzing and bang in the middle of town, at Wake Up! Sydney Central there's always something going on. You'll find us around the corner from Central Station. And if you're on a late flight, no worries: our reception is open 24 hours. Build up a sweat before a busy day with a fitness class, or flex those muscles with some yoga. Fresh Colombian coffee is on tap at our friendly café. When your feet are itching to get out and explore the Harbour City (it's what you came for, right?) grab some cash from our on-site ATM, pick up a free city map and head out.

Location

If you’re coming from the airport, the shuttle bus will bring you right to Central Railway Station, which is just a 3-minute walk away. We’re handily sandwiched between the cultural Ultimo and ultra-chic Surry Hills neighbourhoods, so you’ll be right in the heart of the action. Our highlights? Browsing the local produce at Paddy’s Market, slurping noodles in Chinatown or kicking back by the sea at Darling Harbour.

Rooms and Dorms

Our rooms are modern and airy. Choose between mixed and female-only dorms or private rooms with or without en suites. Reading lights mean you can stay up past everyone else's bedtime to plan your next move (without disturbing your bunkmates). We've taken care of the essentials here – bed linen is free and there are security lockers for you to safely stash your gear.

Extras and activities

Many friendships have been forged on our guided city walks. Back at the hostel, make our restaurant your first stop, then head to the Side Bar – famous for its parties (and don't miss the budget-friendly drinks). If you're after a quieter night, join us for wine and cheese tasting or try our trivia comp. Tight budget? Don’t miss the free pizza at our legendary student nights. Wi-Fi's free too, so you can check in with home (and gloat a little about what you’ve been up to).

Was a good stay, only down fall was that only one lift was working so we had to walk down 7 flights of stairs with our rucksacks. Hardly a problem and I’m sure the other lift will be fixed soon.

Really good place to stay when you first get to Sydney, I would recommend staying here, it's close to everything and the staff are super helpful, there is a night club and you can hear the music but they offer free ear buds and eye mask, the GM come and knocked on each door to make sure people was happy which is a first but also good to see. The hostel is what you make of it, maybe some more places to cook as it does it cramped in the kitchen that is my only semi negative feedback.

Can’t fault my stay, well run and clean hostel with a really good atmosphere. Yes it is on the more expensive side but in this world you get what you pay for and I think it’s worth the extra cost for a really nice hostel

BIG hostel, good staff!! Adequate facilities. This is the second time I've stayed here so obviously I recommend it. Plenty of activities. But because it's so big, it really doesn't have a vibe. Comfy bed. But my whole floor had a musty smell. There's aircon but the window didn't open. Nowhere to dry towel. Generally quite clean, except the bathroom which was more old and tired than dirty. Maybe a bit expensive considering they don't have a communal computer or breakfast. But I'd stay again.

Good hostel, facilities were good and the rooms were cleaned daily... not an ideal hostel if you have work and need to get up early some days as the doors slam really loud and most nights people are partying and making a lot noise so you don’t get much sleep. Location is ideal though.

Close to the station, most things are in walking distance or tram/train. Big hostel, I wasn't thrilled when I arrived because the room was in a total state, due to the people staying there. The shared spaces were clean but the 7th floor smells strongly of pee. Comfy beds, good wifi. I felt too old to be there at 29 but fine for a night or two.

It clearly lacks atmosphere. It seems like a corporativization of the hostel concept. Lot's of activities without any real connection. Long time guests that use the space in a way that prevents the short term ones to feel at ease. Some unhelpful staff (not all though). Basically disconnection without privacy and personal space. I don't recommend it. P.S. The lack of any furniture what-so-ever in the bedrooms except for the bunkers, makes it really difficult to organize and to pack/unpack.

All my food from the fridge was stolen after I just spent around $40 on the shop. The hostel kitchen is over crowded for the amount of people staying however the rooms and bathrooms are good.

The freebies were nice, free pizza and the tour were nice touches. But we were put in a room with people who appeared to be living there, there was stuff all over the floor and the room generally smelt bad and seemed unclean, so it wasn’t a space to spend time in. The location was good, easy to walk or get the train to the harbour area and the staff were helpful. For a short stay, it was fine, just expensive all things considered.

Wake Up! Sydney Central says

I think what makes us different is that we offer an experience, not just a bed. We add value to your room rate by offering free daily activities, including a city orientation tour twice a week, a beach walk, football outings and more. On check-in you'll receive lots of vouchers with discounts, including a free beer in our bar and free coffee in the café. In fact, we've got everything all under one roof: whether you want to do your laundry, get online, watch TV in our common areas, connect to Wi-Fi, prepare your own food, withdraw cash, book a tour, have a beer, coffee or a cheap meal, Wake Up is fully equipped to serve you!
We offer easy access to all of Sydney's main attractions. I recommend taking the short bus ride to the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, or over to Bondi Beach.
We cater mainly to 18-30-year-old travellers on a budget but all adults are welcome and we do cater for people with special needs or disabilities. Unfortunately, we don't have facilities suitable for children. Dev Penney, General Manager
