About Koper

A pretty port city in Slovenia, Koper is on the famously teal-coloured Adriatic coastline, but has a distinctly Venetian feel thanks to its Gothic architecture. Some sites are even replicas of those in Venice. You can uncover the area's medieval history in the centre of town or surround yourself with nature on a hiking trip to the nearby caves and waterfalls.

You'll find some peace and quiet at a Koper hostel that has a Mediterranean garden to relax in. Or, you can get a little closer to the town's past with a stay in an authentic Istrian building filled with original features. At a hostel with a kitchen, cook dinner for yourself and save your euros for local beers. Most Koper hostels have free Wi-Fi for streaming films in the evenings, as well as communal areas for mingling with other visitors.

The medieval centre of Koper is the place to stay if you want to surround yourself with fascinating architecture. Here, you have the main sights within walking distance. The Port of Koper is an industrial area a little farther out. It's home to churches and areas of natural beauty like rock shelters, caves and nature reserves. For a more relaxed vibe try Ankaran, a nearby coastal town with a beach, archaeological sites and olive groves.

Discover Venetian architecture in Slovenia with a trip to the Praetorian Palace, a 15th-century regal building. Tito Square has more examples of the town's medieval structures – follow the cobbled streets from there to Prešeren Square to see the De Ponte fountain, a reproduction of Venice’s Rialto Bridge. Try a local tipple at the Vinakoper, a vineyard where the area's vintages are on show. If you want a taste of nature, head into the hinterland to Supot Waterfall, a 10-metre cascade that tumbles into a blue pool.

To reach Koper via plane, you'll need to fly into Trieste Airport or Venice Marco Polo Airport. Trieste is the quicker option, with a shuttle getting you to the town within 45 minutes. From Venice, you can take a train and be in Koper in around 2 hours. You'll find your way around town easily on foot or by hailing a local bus. From Koper Railway Station, there are buses and trains in and out of the city.
