The best located backpackers accommodation in town, YHA Alice Springs is built within the grounds of an historic outdoor movie theatre.
This is definitely somewhere different to stay! The hostel has the big outdoor movie screen showing free films nightly (available April - September - other months by request). It has a lush outdoor area and swimming pool, all adding to the relaxed friendly atmosphere. All the rooms are air conditioned, and there is a BBQ, and tour desk. Now enjoy the free and fast Wi-Fi all throughout the property.

In a very central location, you can easily explore all the sights of Alice Springs from the YHA. The hostel is close to shops, cafes and pubs. Base yourself here for exploring the Western McDonnell Ranges including Simpsons Gap and Glen Helen, or for trips to Ayers Rock. The hostel tour desk can help with bookings and there are lots of YHA member discounts.

Clean, comfortable, and well situated within Alice Springs proper (only 5 min walk to the bars, botanical gardens, and gorcery store). Not a lot of atmosphere, but this must be because of most people doing multi day tours and using this hostel as a crash pad before and after (as I was). Was exactly what you would expect and want from a backpacking hostel, not more and not less. Saw some other hostels were a decent walk out of town accross the river so would recommend this one over them.

Alice Springs is all about the outdoors. It's surrounded by the Ilparpa Swamp wildlife protected area, Emily and Jessie Gaps nature park, Joint geological/geophysical reserve, and West Macdonnell national park. There are also plenty of smaller parks within the city that are perfect for hanging out or having a BBQ. The Kangaroo Sanctuary is a great spot for anyone looking to learn about (and feed!) one of Australia's most iconic animals. For souvenirs, stop off at Yupu Napa Art Gallery to browse some contemporary indigenous art and other handcrafted works.

Alice Springs has a train station serviced by Great Southern Rail that runs between Darwin, Alice Springs, and Adelaide. Getting around Alice Springs is easily done by foot. There's also a network of bus services that can get you wherever you need to go. Travelling around outside of the town is best done by renting a car in order to have the most flexibility possible.
