Discover a different side of the Big Island at Open Gate Hostel Hawaii, a colorful and artistic hostel surrounded by dramatic lava landscapes on Hawaiʻi Island’s southeast coast.

Our hostel has 11 rooms, including private rooms and shared dorms, and welcomes travelers from around the world. Built among the lava fields of Puna, Open Gate combines art, nature and community in one of the most unique landscapes on the island.

We are located in a remote and peaceful part of the Big Island, away from the busy tourist centers. Explore the surrounding lava landscapes, drive the stunning coastal road, discover black-sand beaches and natural hot springs, or experience an authentic local Wednesday night market with live music, food and a great community atmosphere.

Back at the hostel, climb our stargazing tower and enjoy the night sky with very little surrounding light. Walk around the property and discover colorful artwork, creative spaces and views across the lava landscape.

Open Gate is also eco-friendly, powered by solar energy and using rainwater catchment — a way of living that fits naturally with our unique location.

We are approximately 40–45 minutes south of Hilo in the Puna District and within driving distance of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Please note: Open Gate is intentionally remote. The area is quiet and very dark at night, with limited shops and services nearby. Public transportation is limited, so we strongly recommend having a rental car if you want to explore the Big Island.

If you are looking for nightlife and a busy resort area, this probably isn't the place for you. But if you want lava landscapes, wild coastline, black-sand beaches, local culture, art, stargazing and a more adventurous side of Hawaiʻi, welcome to Open Gate.

Late arrivals must contact us in advance. Self check-in can be arranged.

Check-out: By 11:00 AM

Cancellation Policy: Free cancellation up to 48 hours before arrival. Late cancellations and no-shows will be charged the first night of the reservation.

Payment: Cash, credit cards and debit cards accepted. The property may pre-authorize your card before arrival.

Taxes: Taxes are not included unless otherwise stated during booking.
