🤝 Where you'll meet people
Portuguese hostels have practically turned meeting people into an art form. Communal dinners cooked by the owner's family, tip-based walking tours, pub crawls through Bairro Alto, sunset sessions on the miradouros — the social calendar does the work for you. It's one of the easiest places in Europe to arrive alone and be part of a group by dinner.
If you like plans before you land, the Hostelworld app adds a nice head start: book a bed and you're dropped into that hostel's in-app chat, plus nearby Linkups — free meet-ups where solo travellers find their crowd in a new city. Solo, but never on your own.
📍 Where to stay in Portugal
Portugal is small and easy to get around, so most travellers combine a couple of cities with some coast:
🚋 Lisbon — the capital and best first stop: trams, viewpoints, nightlife and award-winning hostels.
🍷 Porto — riverside charm, port wine cellars and Portugal's best food scene.
🏄 Ericeira — a surf town and reserve just up the coast from Lisbon, full of surf camps.
🏖️ Lagos — the Algarve's social hub: golden cliffs, beaches and a big party scene.
🌊 Sagres — laid-back surf spot on Portugal's wild south-western tip.
⛵ Faro — the eastern Algarve gateway, with old-town charm and boats to the Ria Formosa islands.
Most travellers start in Lisbon, add Porto for a few days, then head south to the Algarve for beaches and surf.

Private rooms cost more but keep the shared kitchens, terraces and common areas.
Family dinners and free tours are a Portuguese speciality — worth looking for in the listing.
Read recent reviews, not just the score — they're the fastest way to spot what a place is really like right now.
🌍 Backpacker routes through Portugal
Portugal is compact and links up neatly with the rest of Iberia:
The classic run — Lisbon → Porto for the two big cities, then south to the Algarve.
The surf coast — Ericeira → Sagres → Lagos for beaches, waves and surf towns.
Cross-border — east into Spain (Seville, Madrid) to keep the trip going.
A week does the highlights; two weeks lets you slow down and surf. Line up your first nights here, then book each stop along the route as your plans firm up.
