About

We are located in Certaldo, in the belly button of Tuscany, a beautiful region of vineyards, olive groves and medieval towns. This is the place where you will find a true taste of Tuscany and the 'bella vita' in an authentic XIVth century setting.

We are bringing Tuscany country living to the backpacking world. If you need a relaxing break from the busy cities, then we are the place for you!

At Bassetto you will find a home away from home, where you will be able to regather your thoughts while you relax next to our pool or swing the afternoon away in a hammock with a glass of wine in hand. In the evening you can take a stroll to the vineyards to watch the sunset over Certaldo Alto, our local medieval town, and at night you can sit in the garden watching the stars and chatting with your fellow guests while being surrounded by fireflies.

Bassetto Guesthouse was formerly a convent of Benedictine monks that was always open to pilgrims passing through. In 1998, our family reopened Bassetto Guesthouse to travellers, with the same notion of hospitality as the monks centuries ago. We wanted our guesthouse to be unique in terms of setting and location, a place you would want to return to and somewhere to relax from city life.

We accommodate everyone here, from couples and families in our private rooms and apartments, to the solo backpacker in our dorm style rooms. Our private rooms and dorms, are separated from each other across the yard, with their own separate kitchens and common areas.

Explore through landscapes sculpted by sunflowers, rolling hills and farms either on foot, bicycle, or horse. Day trips by train are easy from Certaldo so you can go exploring the big cities and see the splendours of Florence, Siena, and Pisa all of which are within an hour.

We organise and run a number of activities from a fresh pasta cooking class with a local chef, to day trips to San Gimignano, Lucca, Volterra, local waterfalls and of course wine tasting!

Bassetto Guesthouse will always make you feel like you won’t want to leave and with our friendly English speaking staff who are always able to help. We are situated in the perfect place to experience the real Tuscany. There is something for everyone here!

We offer a shuttle service from Bassetto to the station every morning. If you don't want to walk, which is a 25-minute journey to the hostel, you can request a car to pick you up for €5 cash.

Please note, due to a tourism levy in the region, we have to charge a 3€ per night, per person tax.

IMPORTANT NOTE.

Bassetto is starting a reconstruction in front of the dorm side of the guesthouse which will have 2/3 workers starting around 8 am till 5 pm; in summer they start early. We apologise in advance for the inconvenience but it’s time to do it after 25 years of activity. We are also moving the swimming pool and will update the website picture once ready.

We look forward to seeing you in Certaldo.

Me and my partner booked for 3 nights and ended up extending our stay, the location is incredible and the building we stayed in was beautiful. Stand out features were the pool which was crystal clear and my personal favourite as someone who enjoys cooking was the kitchen which was very well equipped and with a view of the garden. We would definitely stay here again P.s give Luca and Angelica a pat from us

READ BEFORE BOOKING!! WARNING!! I only gave one star because hostelworld will not let you leave a review with 0 stars, but this was a 0 star experience. I dont know if this property has shifted in management or if something else is going on. We read reviews and saw the photos on Hostelworld and were SO excited to stay here. We stayed two nights. It was an AWFUL experience. My friends and I are very outdoorsy and have spent many, many nights in rough conditions. I would have 100% preferred to sleep in a tent. We did not meet any of the folks who worked at the hostel, no one greeted us, checked us in, or asked if we needed anything. I was eventually able to contact someone via WhatsApp but this was after a full day lag in response. There are two poor old dogs who seem to get fed but otherwise are very unkept. I gave them fresh water because their bowl was filled with bugs and debris. There is no food available to purchase on site, there is apparently a cocktail bar, but it doesn’t seem to be open and there was not even a place to make coffee or purchase water. The tap water is suspicious (and, once again, there was no one there to ask). The trash in bathrooms and kitchens did not seem to have been emptied for days. There was substantial dust and bird feces on all surfaces, including kitchen counters. The whole property is open air and many rooms do not have window screens so bugs and birds come and go as they please. This is a HUGE HEALTH CONCERN. There are no places to secure or store things. No locks on the bedroom doors. Some doors don’t even have handles. One of the kitchens was absolutely overflowing with dirty dishes and was unusable because of this. It smelled awful. There were dirty dishes strewn about other rooms as well. There were other kitchens but we were unwilling to use them because of the bird feces and the potential for disease spillover. There were dirty looking blankets on the beds, some didn’t even have a sheet covering the mattress. On top of this, all of the beds were covered with debris because of the state of the ceiling. No a/c which is fine, but there were no fans and no screens on many windows. One of the showers barely worked, another did not drain. One of the bathroom sinks was full of dirty water and apparently also did not drain. Someone staying there came in late and broke a picture on the wall and the glass on the floor was never fully cleaned up. None of the listed activities were available because we didn’t know who to ask. None of the photos matched the reality we experienced. The only positive was that, when the manager (or someone?) finally got in contact with us, they allowed us to shift rooms to a room with a screen, since our first room didn’t have one (I woke up with a swollen upper lip because of bug bites after that first night).

Bassetto has one of the most lovely vibes I ever experienced before, I met wonderful people there & made unforgettable memories. Love the pool, the events they constantly host & the country Tuscany side. Staff were super friendly & helpful, the train station is just like 25 minutes by walking where you can go to visit Florence 50 minutes away, Pisa, Siena & San Gimignano. Will definitely come back, Grazie Mille Bassetto!
