Very nice, modern facility with helpful and friendly staff. A bonus: elsewhere in the building is a cafe that served me the best salmon dinner I’ll have this year. Outstanding!

Beja, under-the-radar capital of the biggest district in Portugal, is an easy-going, friendly-feeling, unpretentious, gently attractive small city that feels more like a big village. Well worth a stop-over, especially if day-tripping to Baixo Alentejan delights such as Mertola. Problem: a Dearth of accommodation. Fortunately, this amiable few-frills youth hostel bridges that chasm. Without it, the simple overnighting Bejan charms would be lost to the outsider. A pretty pleasant part of Portugal.
