Almost anyone can just walk in and snoop around the rooms, as found out when a friend went looking for me! Breakfast is simple but fine and the place is clean, has good bar and kitchen and air con in TV room during the day.

Big hostel with lots of people in the very centre of Cartagena. The crowd there is mainly young and party going, but I didn't find it as noisy as it was reported in some advices before. The staff is really nice and helpful and the hostel is very well kept. The location is very safe so one can go in and out at any time without problems, which is not the case of every area of the city.

The staff is the best part of the hostel, Miriam, Alexander, Santiago and Alvaro have always been super helpful and fun. They managed to keep the place organised throughout the day, lively in the evenings and quiet at night. It was a real pleasure to meet them.

This is a party hostel, which for me is a good thing. It's a great place for solo travelers because it's very easy to meet people. I seriously met about 20 people during my 4 night stay. It does stay very loud until about 11. Salsa class was fun. The staff are a little inconsistent though. When I checked in, the person checking in next to me was receiving tips on everything and was shown to his room. All I got was my room number and sheets. Some staff are way more helpful than others.

El Viajero is a clean, centrally-located hostel with a vibrant atmosphere. The bunk beds in the shared dorms are high but comfortable and offer large lockers for luggage storage underneath (bring a small lock, or buy one at the Exito, only 2 blocks away). There are safe deposit boxes in the shared rooms, operated with codes, small but enough to hold passports and cellphones. The kitchen provides breakfast every day (included with the cost of the stay) - cold cereal, coffee or tea, fruit, juice and toast, and the dining room is open for guest use. The showers are co-ed and clean, bathrooms are always open and clean. There is a media room with movies and a large TV, also several computers for guests' use. Recommended!

Kitchen too small for so many guests.Staff was not enough at the reception. There was a queue every time i went there. But the worst was the security. I met a guy who got his tennis stolen. And another who left his shorts with the wallet inside during the night next to his bed. He also got it stolen. Anyone could enter from the outside and go to your room. Also, staff puts a sticker on your backpack in the luggage room but when i left no one checked if I was really taking mine...Avoid this place

Very well located, clean hostel. Safes are provided, though at busy periods people can walk in the door past reception unchecked. There is a really cool bar area, though it seems to stay quiet even on weekends. This is definitely a contender for best place to stay in Cartagena, it's amazing to walk out the door and already be on the poky streets of the walled city!

I am currently living in Barranquilla and plan to make many trips that pass through Cartagena. Because of the hospitality that I have received during my stay here at El Viajero I will make sure to always stay here. The receptionist welcome you with a huge smile and help you with directions where ever you may want to go. I extremly recomend this hostal.

One of the more sociable hostels you can choose - mainly due to a large number of people in a relatively small space. Dorms are aligned on either side of a central, open air, "street" with an array of seats provided outside each room. Such a design is good during the day yet at night noise can be a big issue. I guess it's just luck as to whether you encounter other guests who don't realise how much their voice travels at 2.00am. Would stay here again but would also be willing to try elsewhere.

The hostal chain El Viajero have nice things going for them. I stayed in El Viajero in Colonia, Uruguay too, beside Cartagena. I am sure the people behind the chain have the best of intentions. However, El Viajero staff (in both Colonia and Cartagena) are the worst I have ever experienced in my many stays in hostals. Very unfriendly. They treat you like you are cattle. They are being very arogant and seem more interested in theire own computer surfing then attending to their guest.

BIg hostel, a lot of good space, but too little integration among guests. Great staff, well located, near everything you need in Cartagena. I stayed in the mixed dorm - the bathroom was NEVER clean, smelling badly, even after complaints.

Overall: Stay here! Great location in old city, but walking distance to the crazier/dirtier Getsemani area. || Rooms: Our room was nice and clean. Bathrooms were clean, though showers get a little humid. || Security: Had electronic lock boxes in all rooms, great feature! Also padlock areas under beds for luggage. || Internet: Decently reliable wifi covering all common areas. || Other: Alex is the man!

I've marked down the hostel because our bathroom wasn't cleaned and quickly became an awful experience. The additional shared bathrooms helped though. The kitchen is good and breakfast generous. Most staff are good but not all are friendly. The lockers are great and beds comfy. Good activities too.

Location is great, but it can be a bit loud with the bar. Staff was OK- would help if explicitly asked and sometimes seemed annoyed. Though they also may have been understaffed. Beds were comfortable enough but the top bunk is really high and without a guard rail. I was afraid of falling.
