This is a really big hostel but it still manages to have a great atmosphere. Cool bar, cafe and chill out areas. Rooms were very clean and had ensuite, which was great, although they were pretty small. The pub crawl and free walking tours pick you up from generator hostel which is fantastic! And it's literally next to central train station, although a little bit of a walk (or few train stops) from the cool areas like as St Pauli.
Hostel was full of a school group which didn't help the atmosphere. The staff weren't friendly or helpful. The rooms don't have air conditioning or windows that open very far - low air flow! The toilet and shower rooms were tiny! Saving grace is the security. There is a guard at the door, to access the rooms you need a keycard and each bed has lockers that can fit a pack. Each bed had its own light and charging socket but mine didn't work. It was conveniently near train station but that's all.
The hostel's bar was one of my favorites, great place to meet people. Pretty regular/good hostel besides that.
Though my room was mistakenly booked twice, they were very nice compensate me with free breakfast. The hostel is in general pretty good, but the showers are quite narrow and in summers, it can be very hot. It would have been too to at least have a fan. The location isn't bad, since the Main Station is right near by, but the area can seem a bit sketchy in the evening.
On the one hand it seemed lively though on the other it seemed understaffed with only one person serving at the bar (hardly enough for a party). Ensuite bathrooms are tiny, only good enough to get wet in - shaving or cleaning your teeth is a challenge. Every floor has larger private bathrooms too though. Good location, although if you're a party animal you might like it better nearer Reeperbahn / St Pauli on the otherside of town.
It is located just next to the main station which is great if your just in Hamburg to transfer for the bext train. Facilities are good with lockers under the bed that can fit a large backpack. There a keycards to every entrance at the hostel so you feel secure even the area outside is a bit dodgy at night.
we were so disappointed the staff was very unfriendly, the bathrooms are really small, there wasnt air conditioner the room was very hot and everybody was angry about. the price we paid was not as we tougth it would be
Great location and friendly staff. TINY showers but lockers in rooms were great. Rooms were incredibly hot in the summer as our window was broken

They charge me internet, and it is a free facility, also they are a lot of homeless in front the hostel, location is perfect near the Hbf . Friendly staff.
Very nice hostel! Buy the breakfast for 4.90€ and be there at 8 or earlier, so worth it!
Generator Hostel was great. Great location; in middle of Hamburg close to Hauptbahnhof, tours of city available, lots to do in hostel common area and people to meet, quite in the rooms (when not talking to roommates). I'll stay here again if in Hamburg again!
Good location near train station. Very large hostel. Good cafe and bar. Good for large groups. Discouraged being in outside good. No kitchen.
Everything was great. Maybe some AC in the hostel would be good. But they had computers, internet, free printing, wifi, great atmosphere, discounted food.
I wanted not to like this big, trendy hostel. But I liked it. It was very clean, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and I had a lovely time talking with a bunch of the other guests in the bar. I guess if I were to dislike anything, it'd be the pod-style bathroom inside the room, but it really was fine, too. The neighborhood is terrible. That's one bad thing. But it was a short walk to a good neighborhood and the hostel had good security. So what can I say: don't hesitate to stay here
Great location, but the staff could be a lot friendlier. The bathrooms are too small--even for Europe. Also, the hostel can do better with the card keys they are way too sensitive and work half the time. You have to go out of your way to meet people here. Dissapointing since Generator can do better than this.
The hostel is ok. The beds were fine and everything was clean. My big issue was that the bathrooms are literally smaller than train/airplane stalls. They were so hard to use and everything got wet so easily, which was terrible for a room of 8 people.
When I stayed the people in my room were in a group and decided to do their own thing for the night, however Sandemans pick up people for the bar crawl downstairs and I went on my own - met people on the crawl and had a great night in hamburg! There is a bar at the Hostel, but I didn't have time to check it out as only stayed one night.
Another battery farm hostel as is the Generator speciality. It'd be good if this place didn't exist and maybe 3, 4, 5 even 6 cool boutique hostels could rise in its place. Yeh it's dressed up with 'cool' furniture and pictures on the wall but it's a soulless profiteering machine. But what can you do...
