This hostel is great! It just has everything you would expect from a good hostel ... Friendly and helpful staff, a bar, even a security guy at the door! Highly recommend

A nice hostel. Only complaints are that the toilet and showers in the dorms are tiny and you will bang the walls. Also, the plastic boards between beds really light up at night when someone uses their phone/tablet/computer.

The location of hostel is great, rooms are clean and nice, staff is really helpful and friendly (especially girl named Andrea) only the bathrooms are a bit too small (but the toilet and bathroom is in every room). Would recommend it!

Nice hostel, directly outside the main station. Clean, nice staff, nice seating area/lounge downstairs with bar and bistro. I was staying in a 6 bed dorm and we had en-suit a very small shower and a separate toilette, both very small but clean.

We naively arrived at hostel, the bitter sweet taste of debauchery and promise on our lips. We promptly locked our valuables away, and left for an epicurean feast of Kentucky's finest fried chicken. Upon our return after an hour we discovered that George Clooney and the rest of Ocean's 11 had somehow evaded the security guard and gotten past no less than 3 locked doors and a locker to steal a passport, laptop, 2 cameras, and 2 iPods. Staff were unsurprised, the police even less so. Avoid.

Owner Comment (Show)
First of all, thank you for your honest feedback. The Generator Hostel Hamburg is now only 1 year old and we try to improve our service everyday since the day we opened and that is why it is so important to receive the feedback of our guests to get even better. We have a security who protects our guests and who ensures that only hostel guests can enter the building. He also does frequent rounds through the entire building to ensure even more safety. When you book a shared room it is a questions of trust, since you are sharing your room with “mates” from all over the world. That’s why we provide every bed with a security box which you can lock with a padlock. We also have safety deposit boxes in the lobby to lock valuable things. It is very unusual that items and personal belongings get lost in our property. That’s why we’re shocked when something like this happens. Since the police in large cities like Hamburg is dealing with thefts everyday, they probably didn’t seem very surprised when they came to note down your incident and we’re sorry for the wrong impression this has created. However, we’re very sorry for the loss of your belongings and for the anger and confusion this has caused. But we can assure you that we’re working very hard to keep the Generator Hamburg the safest and most secure Hostel in town. With warm regards, Martin Major Front Office Manager

Upon arrival, I had a good first impression. However, after leaving for only an hour to get dinner, I came back to find that my laptop, camera, passport, and my friend's camera and iPod had been stolen. The staff was incredibly unhelpful with this and seemed not to care at all, even though the person had gone through 3 locked doors and a padlock. The police were not surprised about the robberies, apparently it happens often. If you like your belongings to belong to you, avoid it.

I think the bathroom and the toilets are too much small. It will be good if they more space inside, for facility. When you want to rince your teeth, it's impossible. It have to take a glase and fill up and in the room i didn't see the glases at our service...

This is my second time to complete this questionnaire. We were very pleased with our stay in Generator. The reception and security staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Our only grip was that the breakfast was very repetitive and lacking brown breadrolls, fruit or salat. After two days, breakfast became monotonous. Also the music played during breakfast sounded weird to us (aged 14 to 40!). It would be nice to have one TV screen showing Sky news WITH sound somewhere downstairs.

Rooms where good value for location, facilities and cleanliness! However we could not borrow a towel and had to pay 6 Euros for a generator one. And we had to buy a padlock to lock our things away. Also there was a restaurant and bar but you could not take your own food or cook your own meals there. Good for a short stay though not for people traveling on a budget.

This is a fantastic hostel located directly outside the Hauptbahnhof which is so convenient. It's only about a ten minute walk into the centre of town or the is a U bahn station right outside the front door. The staff were friendly enough and the rooms were comfortable and clean. Also each bed has it's own powerpoint and lamp which is always a bonus in a hostel. Overall I think it's a great hostel and not the most expensive around! Enjoy your stay!!!

Fantastic hostel, absolutely perfect location. Rooms were immaculate. Ensuites small but suitable, larger showers in the hallway. WiFi was fantastic, breakfast was really yummy. I had yoghurt with muesli and some cheese and meat on bread with juice. There was also tea and coffee. Would have liked there to be fruit but was still great. Couldn't ask for more from a hostel for the price!

Please add a message in the dorm room that there are additional bathrooms in the hall. I liked the plugs in the headboards and lobby area.
