Really good hostel, clean, modern, nice, right by the train station but a little far from the Reeperbahn.

To be honest, there's not much wrong with Generator Hostel. The only thing that was annoying were the small ensuite bathroom facilities. Normally I avoid hostels with ensuites. It actually sounds better than it is: you can hear everything your roommates are doing and when checking out everyone's running to the same tiny little shower. It's like a cheap hotel so do not expect to meet a lot of people. Everyone's with someone else. Big is not necesarily better. It depens on your wishes. Your choice

The bathrooms in the female dorms are too small, the dorms are fine

Commenters who said this is like a hotel are right, but just because it's nice and clean doesn't mean it's sterile or lacking in character. Clean, modern dorms. Helpful, well-staffed reception. Right across the street from the train station (make sure you leave the station the correct exit) and 4 min walk from the big art museum. There isn't a lot to do in Hamburg, so you'll want to take advantage of the hostel bar. I recommend this place.

Good hostel, but bathrooms are extremely small and ours had no soap dispenser.

The location was excellent as it is literally steps away from the central station. I stayed in a 6 bed female dorm and it was very clean and bright. As others have said, the bathrooms are tiny - basically like an airplane. The locks on the rooms are good but basically anyone can come in the main doors and get up to the room areas since there is open access from stairs off the bar. Overall a good hostel with good value but I wouldnt leave any valuables in the room.

Stayed with my girlfriend in the Generator Hostel Hamburg for 3 nights. Booked only one, but extended it on site. The Hostel is right beside the Centralstation in Hamburg and in a 5-Minute-Walk you are inside downtown. The Hostel has a lof of positive things (excellent Security, Cleanliness and Location). Also the Staff is very friendly and helpful. The Bar downstairs is beautiful. Ive missed a bit the familiar factor, because its a really huge Hostel. A bit like a Hotel.

I enjoyed staying in this modern and stylish hostel. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. The only thing i will recommend they do is have bigger bathrooms in the rooms (the bathrooms in the rooms are very tiny) and have a kitchen to cater for budget travellers who can't spend five euro's on breakfast or dinner.

The location of hostel is great, rooms are clean and nice, staff is really helpful and friendly (especially girl named Andrea) only the bathrooms are a bit too small (but the toilet and bathroom is in every room). Would recommend it!

A nice hostel. Only complaints are that the toilet and showers in the dorms are tiny and you will bang the walls. Also, the plastic boards between beds really light up at night when someone uses their phone/tablet/computer.

Upon arrival, I had a good first impression. However, after leaving for only an hour to get dinner, I came back to find that my laptop, camera, passport, and my friend's camera and iPod had been stolen. The staff was incredibly unhelpful with this and seemed not to care at all, even though the person had gone through 3 locked doors and a padlock. The police were not surprised about the robberies, apparently it happens often. If you like your belongings to belong to you, avoid it.

We naively arrived at hostel, the bitter sweet taste of debauchery and promise on our lips. We promptly locked our valuables away, and left for an epicurean feast of Kentucky's finest fried chicken. Upon our return after an hour we discovered that George Clooney and the rest of Ocean's 11 had somehow evaded the security guard and gotten past no less than 3 locked doors and a locker to steal a passport, laptop, 2 cameras, and 2 iPods. Staff were unsurprised, the police even less so. Avoid.

Nice hostel, directly outside the main station. Clean, nice staff, nice seating area/lounge downstairs with bar and bistro. I was staying in a 6 bed dorm and we had en-suit a very small shower and a separate toilette, both very small but clean.
