Good place, rooms have heaps of space, tho the houses are left unlocked and anyone from the street could wander on in. Plenty of lockers tho. Amazing cheap eats provided for breakfast and dinner. If you allergic to cats take some antihistamines...

Rooms aren't much, I wasn't looking forward to sleeping in it. Common areas are good, bathrooms are clean. Long walk to french quarter but the trolleys work well for the location.

Though the comfort and cleanliness of the rooms and bathrooms left much to be desired, the friendly staff, the home-cooked meals, the cool backyard and the great character of the India House Hostel made my stay a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable one. Thanks for one of the most fun trips I've had!

Great hostel with an amazing atmosphere. Streetcar station just around the corner, will take you straight to the French Quarter. Only downside: Some staff members seemed to be annoyed by any question. Besides that, I've had a perfect stay, will definitely come back!!

Of the dozen or so hostels around the world I have stayed at this hostel would rate among the top few for character. But that could also just be because this was New Orleans :) Booked a private room. The room was spacious but badly maintained. The sheets and pillows on the bed had dust and there were cobwebs in the room. There were two thermostat heaters but neither would start. The floor was dusty. Staff were awesome Breakfast & dinner available to buy, didn't try as I am a vegetarian

Great social atmosphere, the pool is awesome, close proximity to the French quarter, right on cable car line and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

India is a really homey hostel - the buildings are old so don't expect too much - but the vibe in that place makes it all worth it! The staff is really friendly (specially Simone - a sweetheart!) and they do their best to please you (they even allowed me to change room in the middle of the night because a room mate was coughing all night...). Love the "restaurant" in the yard - solid cheap meals! They should have more lockers though - preferable in the rooms!

I have stayed in many hostels throughout Europe and America and India House was the worst by far! The location is terrible, it's not a 'quick cable car ride' into the French quarter-we walked in faster than the cable car. We waited at front desk for 5 mins then rang the bell. When the girl finally came, she said 'we don't really ring the bell here. If you ring the bell we tend to make you wait longer.' Our room had mould all over the shower curtain. DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU COME TO NEW ORLEANS!

Loved this place! Amazing atmosphere, I felt extremely comfortable. The only thing that wasn't perfect while staying there was that, they didn't have enough lockers so I had to leave my stuff in my room, but nothing happened to it.

overall, things were really clean and my room was half empty, so I didn't have any issues with fighting for the bathroom or space in the room. however, the staff could be unfriendly and/or unhelpful at times - i don't understand why they can't extend your reservation in person, but require you to go online to secure a spot? you waste $2 on an unnecessary reservation fee. we had to wait until the next morning and wake up early each day to reserve a new spot, instead of letting us extend at night

India house looks a little dilapidated, but if that is a problem for you you should consider a hotel. It's cheap for a reason, if you want a cleaner nicer place you need to pay more for it. India house has an excellent setup for the seasoned or new backpacker.

They're dinners and breakfasts which they cook and sell are good value for money and taste good. Not located in the French Quarter, but there is a cable car right outside that goes directly there, so the location is pretty good. Cleanliness and privacy could be a bit better - my private room had no blinds on the window so anybody could look in. There's no heating, so don't go when it's extremely cold!

We really enjoyed our stay although some of the communal bathrooms weren't as clean as I would have liked to see. Overall, we had a great time. There's great staff and convenient systems in place to make your stay enjoyable (e.g., access to the fridge and kitchen area 24 hours.

Generally fine, although I got zero minutes sleep on the second night as it was a busy one for people entering/leaving the dorm and unfortunately the bedroom doors' hinges needed a heavy dose of lubricant. Also, there was only plastic cutlery and very little crockery in the kitchen. All hostels vary and I guess there is no specific obligation to provide anything, but if part of the point of a hostel is that resources are used sensibly then maybe you could get some metal from the salvation army?

Looking at the price you cant really expect more-its pretty cheap, u have a place to sleep although the beds arent very comfy, going to the center of the city takes around 10 min with a street car (the stop is right next to the hostel though) or like 20-30 min walk. I didnt spend much time at the hostel but I saw ppl hangin out there quite often-the atmosphere seemed pretty cool n the stuff was really nice.
