Jailhouse was pretty good. On arrival our beds still had the last occupants sheets still on, but staff fixed that as soon as they realized. Really like the clear shelving for free stuff in the kitchen. We took some but left more. Could do with an outside laundry line though. Good character

Not being the hostel kind of backpacker I truly enjoyed my time locked up. Staff was helpfull, kitchen area big and clean, toilets and showers - even when limited I think fitted the atmosphere. Rooms are cells so anyone who complains about the size should propably think about not spending time in jail. Jailhouse rocked my start for NZ!

Guess it was an experience to live in a cell Maybe not having an ensuite and staying in a hostel is just not for me anymore. For a private room, a good bedside light would have been a good option. I found the harsh ceiling light very unpleasant - was this supposed to be part of the prison cell experience? My tv remote control did not work. * bedside light for reading. The only light available was the unpleasant ceiling one. room was very cramped. Perhaps the cell experience is not for me.

A nice hostel with a quriky look. Its alot further from the city than I was lead to believe so get used to abit of a hike. There wasnt any planned events or special nights which meant people kept to themselves. Could use a few more showers and toilets. Over all a vey nice hostel that looks super cool.

Great atmosphere of jail, quite a tiny room! Adequate cooking facilities, not too many spaces to relax. Small bathrooms but never had to wait so ok. Enjoyed the walk into the city through beautiful parks and found an interesting meal nearby. Young lass on reception did a sterling job singlehandedly answering questions for the whole evening.

Great experience to spend some nights in a Jail. The rooms are not big as they were jails but worth the visit. The kitchen is huge and plenty of common areas. The only thing is that the staff could not (or did not want to) help me to check the roads condition, the first one did not even know about broken bridge (in the news all the time) and the second one only gave me a number to figure out myself.

This place is quirky and that seems to be what you pay for - no free breakfast or wi-fi. Location not the best as quite far out of town. Staff sort of helpful but it is the longest I have taken to check in while other people seen to in between. I enjoyed my stay as a one off experience though.

The staff were too busy to give us the complete information that we needed for getting back in after 9pm, for completeing the prossess of filling out the BBH cards, etc.

Thee jail setup makes for poor facilities. Also, the cost of WiFi and laundry is pretty outrageous.

The people who were staying at the room next door were slamming doors and talking/laughing loudly at 1am and then again at 4am without any regard for the quiet time signs all over.

take my review with a pinch of salt - I have stayed at some amazingly tremendous hostels so I could just be spoilt. This hostel was great but three things could be improved: 1) toilets - toilets could be cleaned again in the evening as going at night/early morn wasnt always pleasant . huge uncovered bin right under where you brush your teeth not great 2) accessible light switches for night time e.g. by the door instead of over someone's bed 3) in-room lockers that arent filled with blankets

The staff were great! very accomodating and knowledgable. Unfortunately our stay was spoiled by the noise made by a couple of inconsiderate people who talked in the central common area (and therefore heard by all occupants) in the middle of the night. Unfortunate for a hostel that advertises that they are a quiet place to stay. Otherwise a great stay.
