Jailhouse was pretty good. On arrival our beds still had the last occupants sheets still on, but staff fixed that as soon as they realized. Really like the clear shelving for free stuff in the kitchen. We took some but left more. Could do with an outside laundry line though. Good character

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate your stay with us. We're glad to hear that overall you enjoyed your stay with us. We're really sorry to hear that your room had been overlooked. We have looked into it and found that it was due a computer glitch which printed an out of date house keeping sheet. It's good to know that our staff were able to rectify the issue quickly and efficiently and we hope it didn't inconvenience you too much. Regarding the washing line, we are not able to put one up due to lack of garden space however we do have clothes drying racks available for guests use and also dryers in the laundry room. Once again thank you for your valuable feedback and we hope to see you in Jail again soon. Kind regards The Jailhouse team

Not being the hostel kind of backpacker I truly enjoyed my time locked up. Staff was helpfull, kitchen area big and clean, toilets and showers - even when limited I think fitted the atmosphere. Rooms are cells so anyone who complains about the size should propably think about not spending time in jail. Jailhouse rocked my start for NZ!

Guess it was an experience to live in a cell Maybe not having an ensuite and staying in a hostel is just not for me anymore. For a private room, a good bedside light would have been a good option. I found the harsh ceiling light very unpleasant - was this supposed to be part of the prison cell experience? My tv remote control did not work. * bedside light for reading. The only light available was the unpleasant ceiling one. room was very cramped. Perhaps the cell experience is not for me.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate our hostel and we're sorry to hear that you found your cell lighting too harsh. We agree that it would be great to have bedside lights, but with the incredibly thick, original prison walls it presents us with quite a challenge when it comes to wiring. This suggestion has come up before and we are always looking into a way around it. With regards to the tv remote control, we do have spare batteries at reception so we hope that you were able to ask our friendly wardens for some help with that. Kind regards The Jailhouse team

A nice hostel with a quriky look. Its alot further from the city than I was lead to believe so get used to abit of a hike. There wasnt any planned events or special nights which meant people kept to themselves. Could use a few more showers and toilets. Over all a vey nice hostel that looks super cool.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate your stay in Jail. It's great to hear that overall you enjoyed your stay. Although the city is a 25 minute walk, it can be very pleasant to stroll through the beautiful Hagley park route. There is also a bus stop 2 minutes walk from the hostel, where frequent buses will take you on a 10 minute journey to the city centre. Regarding the events and special nights, we find our guests are quite happy to socialise is our communal areas and also in the bars and cafes close to the hostel. Your comments have prompted us to look at doing more social activities. We do advertise what is happening in the city such as special backpacker nights at bars and gig and event guides. We agree that more showers and toilets would be great. However as we are in a historic building we are quite limited with what we can change. Once again thank you for your valuable feedback. We hope to see you again in the future. Kind regards The Jailhouse team

Great atmosphere of jail, quite a tiny room! Adequate cooking facilities, not too many spaces to relax. Small bathrooms but never had to wait so ok. Enjoyed the walk into the city through beautiful parks and found an interesting meal nearby. Young lass on reception did a sterling job singlehandedly answering questions for the whole evening.

Great experience to spend some nights in a Jail. The rooms are not big as they were jails but worth the visit. The kitchen is huge and plenty of common areas. The only thing is that the staff could not (or did not want to) help me to check the roads condition, the first one did not even know about broken bridge (in the news all the time) and the second one only gave me a number to figure out myself.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate our hostel and we're really pleased to see that overall you enjoyed your stay with us. We're sorry to hear that you encountered some problems at reception with regards to getting advice about road conditions on the west coast. Our friendly Jail Wardens are always very happy to help guests as much as possible and assist with making phone calls/ checking internet etc for information. Perhaps you came to the desk at an exceptionally busy time. When we have lots of guests waiting we can't always spend as much time as we want to with them. In these unavoidable circumstances we would always give guests the necessary information to make it easy for them to find the answer. Once again thank you for your valuable feedback and we hope to see you in Jail again very soon. The Jailhouse team

This place is quirky and that seems to be what you pay for - no free breakfast or wi-fi. Location not the best as quite far out of town. Staff sort of helpful but it is the longest I have taken to check in while other people seen to in between. I enjoyed my stay as a one off experience though.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate your stay in Jail. It's great to hear that your enjoyed your time with us. Post quake our suburb is fast becoming a vibrant and exciting area, filled with cafes, bars, theatre, sports stadium and live music venues. The central city is an easy 25 minute walk through beautiful Hagley park. It's also just a 10 minute ride on the regular bus service that departs from opposite the hostel. For a small fee we rent bikes which makes exploring Christchurch easy and fun. We are sorry you had a bit of a wait for your check in. We can only assume you arrived at the same time as lots of other guests. This can happen from time to time during our busy summer months. Although we don't provide breakfast we have a fully equipped catering standard kitchen. Our friendly Jail Wardens can recommend some great cafes within 5 minutes walk of the hostel. They offer some generous discounts to Jailhouse guests. Regarding the wi-fi, it is not generally free in New Zealand and we believe it is reasonably priced. Once again thank you for taking the time to rate your stay. kind regards, The Jailhouse team

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate our hostel. We're sorry to hear that you encountered problems at reception regarding assistance with the BBH cards. Our staff are required to fill in the cards and ask guests to sign them. We hope that this was done for you. Perhaps you were at reception at a very busy check time when our staff were attending to lots of other guests at the same time.We assume that they were able to direct you to the BBH website for further information and that you felt you could approach them at a quieter time for further assistance. With regards to entering the hostel after reception hours we have a notice on the front door explaining how the key fob works. Staff do generally also explain how it works when showing a guest to their room.

Thee jail setup makes for poor facilities. Also, the cost of WiFi and laundry is pretty outrageous.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate your stay in Jail. The charges for internet and laundry are in line with most other accommodations in New Zealand so we think that they're pretty reasonable. We were disappointed to hear that you felt that the facilities were unsatisfactory as we pride ourselves in our high standards of cleanliness, service and customer comfort and satisfaction. Once again thanks for your feedback Kind regards The Jailhouse Team

The people who were staying at the room next door were slamming doors and talking/laughing loudly at 1am and then again at 4am without any regard for the quiet time signs all over.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to rate our hostel and we're glad to see that overall you enjoyed your stay with us. We're sorry that you encountered some noise issues. Our Night Managers are trained to enforce the 'no noise in the atrium after 9pm policy but once they have gone to bed it is regrettably out of our control. We do have a buzzer available on reception to contact the Night Manager should a noise problem go on for too long. Generally we find that most inmates are considerate and adhere to our noise policy but unfortunately some guests are not aware of how noise can echo in our atrium. Once again thank you for your valuable feedback. Kind regards The Jailhouse team

take my review with a pinch of salt - I have stayed at some amazingly tremendous hostels so I could just be spoilt. This hostel was great but three things could be improved: 1) toilets - toilets could be cleaned again in the evening as going at night/early morn wasnt always pleasant . huge uncovered bin right under where you brush your teeth not great 2) accessible light switches for night time e.g. by the door instead of over someone's bed 3) in-room lockers that arent filled with blankets

i guess is the coolest hostel in Christchurch!

The staff were great! very accomodating and knowledgable. Unfortunately our stay was spoiled by the noise made by a couple of inconsiderate people who talked in the central common area (and therefore heard by all occupants) in the middle of the night. Unfortunate for a hostel that advertises that they are a quiet place to stay. Otherwise a great stay.
