The staff were great! very accomodating and knowledgable. Unfortunately our stay was spoiled by the noise made by a couple of inconsiderate people who talked in the central common area (and therefore heard by all occupants) in the middle of the night. Unfortunate for a hostel that advertises that they are a quiet place to stay. Otherwise a great stay.

Stayed there for the the Christmas. Awesome place to stay in. A bit far from town if one does not have a car, but overall enjoyed my stay there.

The kitchen was a mess due to laze guests, laundry excellent as well as the unique atmosphere.

Very spacious rooms. Friendly staff who are happy to help out with any problems. Can be very loud at night - although the hostel does have a 'quiet after 9pm' policy this was not implemented by staff (in fact staff were often the nosiest!) so ear plugs are an absolute must.

Cool place to stay, but quite a bit out of the city centre. Having said that, we found decent bars and cafes on Lincoln Rd.

The hostel was a bit of a walk to the city centre, but made up for that with character. Good facilities with large kitchen and movie room, staff were also quite helpful. I would recommend staying at the Jailhouse if you don't mind the walk into town!

Kitchen was clean and well-equipped. In general, the staff had very poor local knowledge and weren't much help.

Tough to get my bag up the stairs. Otherwise, I loved it. The staff was terrific.

Decent enough hostel for the short term visitor. I think the place is a novelty and ok for a passing traveller. The lady at the front desk with short dark hair needs to be congratulated as her help narrowly avoided me missing my flight and all my travel plans falling apart. Staff were the best thing about this place and the cleaning was always done to a high standard. Facilities were good but the atmosphere felt a little cold as it kind of all felt separate and that didn't encourage interaction.

I stayed at the Jailhouse for about 10 days, more than I first planned to. But as I had problems buying a car and withdrawing money from my Austrian account, I had to stay longer than expected. Unfortunately, I was not informed about BBH and its advantages, I could have saved a lot of money there. Meanwhile another host has advised me to become a member and so I enjoy quite reasonable rates. I have never paid 85 dollars for a room afterwards. As I will return to Christchurch in April, perhaps y

The older woman with the short dark hair is NOT ABLE TO WORK WITH A COMPUTER. Give a different job to her!!! Even selling a T-Shirt was an almost impossible task for her.

Had some issues with staff who were new and really couldn't answer questions. I know training on the job but really need someone experienced to be available. NOT ENOUGH SMILES and the kitchen gets grubby easily it seems but that is a comment on the guests I suppose.

Staff were not helpful, especially the girl at the desk who, when I went to check in, said "I can't help you with that". She didn't offer to get anyone else and she didn't explain why she couldn't. Security isn't great - no lockers and doors that people never lock. Bathrooms were OK, the kitchen was a bit crowded. It was kind of cool being in an old jailhouse, but I'm not sure it was worth the night's stay.
