Great place, but the food was nothing great and pricy. Better to go down the street to get your meals. Other than that they have a wicked beer selection an it is the best hostel I have ever seen. Great staff and helpful service. I would highly recommend this place.

The hostel is in a great location, the room was nice and clean and the staff were very helpful and proficient in English. However without a fan or air conditioning it was stifling hot, the wi-fi didn't work on our floor and the hostel was incredibly noisy until 2-3AM every morning. Bring ear plugs.

I would have liked to have toilet paper in the WC.

Upland Hostel is very, very, beautiful and feels much more like a boutique hotel than a hostel. The design, cleanliness, overall quality of the property, and the staff service are all top-notch. Kunming is not a very interesting Chinese city, but staying at the Upland Hostel makes the visit a memorable one.

Excellent food, friendly staff, and beautiful setting. Staff members need to improve English skills to appeal more to travelers. Tours directly through the hostel would excellent as well, rather than just directions or information about attractions.

The hostel was good overall, but it needs to work on somethings as: cleanliness of the toilets.

Great hostel, just needed the address of the hostel to be in chinese characters since most taxi drivers in Kunming don't speak English or read it. Thank goodness for a phone number so our taxi driver could call the hostel and get directions.

The Double Deluxe is nice (in April) but might get hot as its on top floor and I saw no AC in the room. The bar/lounge area is great to relax. Security is good as you even need a card to get in from the front gate. Location great.. Not happy with staff: bad english is quite irritating when you are facing the no water periods in Kunming. Water usage was cut off most of weekend and the staff didn't feel is was necessary to inform quests which makes planning your day a real pain. Only "Maybe"-s.

The room was modern and clean. I was only able to get a wi-fi signal in the communal area. Drinks were overpriced (12Y for a beer??) and the two meals I had were swimming in oil. I found the staff to be short and unhelpful when asking for information.

I loved the building -- it's a maze of brick/stone rooms and buildings. The bar/common area was great, and the location near Green Lake was good. They also have a booking service for train/bus tickets, etc.

This place felt more like a designer hotel / wilderness retreat then a youth hostel - I was really impressed with the design and the care for detail in the room and the restaurant area. Staff were fairly helpful too. The only problem was the water was completely stopped for about a day - apparently due to a water shortage in the building. Staff were not particularly apologetic about this, but it was running again by the evening.

The rooms are very nice and great for the price. The hostel is quirky- with a great bar/restaurant that has a pool table, books, and some pretty decent food. Close to the main temple and close to the Green Lake which is a nice place to walk around in. Staff speak decent English and are helpful- they booked our train tickets and helped us a lot.

The hostel was pretty quirky with loads of character. All the facilities you would expect and more. The food was good and also cheap. The staff were all very cheerful, helpful and obliging to our needs. There was some minor alterations going on when we were there but it didnt really affect our stay. Be aware that the 'on-suite' bathroom was seperated from the bedroom by patio doors which could proove a bit embarrasing for some,. (There were curtains on the bedroom side of the door).
