Great place. Freindly staff, good people. Not to big and overrun so it feels a bit like home.

Owners very helpful and nice -- arrived to find 3 muggings (one guy twice!!) had taken place the night before--the tuesday night street party --one lad ended up with a broken leg -- so this "greeting" me on my arrival made me very edgy my whole time in Salvador and couldn't wait to get out of the city!... --Having said that , i had no problems myself and the hostel was very nice indeed --just the area seems a bit dodgy..

Owner Comment (Show)
Ratings are for the hostel, Not the city as we have no control of what is happening on the street. saying that, when someone comes back walking, totally drunk, alone and in the middle of night he can find problems even in London. saving 3-4 reals of the taxi ride sometimes costs even more. In the case of the guy who broke his leg he was first arrested by the police for pinching a waiters ass, after that he insisted on entering a street that his other friends from the hostel told him not to because it is known to be a no go zone. Despite what some people think Salvador is not a dangerous city. You need to be a little street smart, like anywhere in the world i guess. Inbal Proud backpacker and hostel(s) owner

I really enjoyed our stay in Nega Maluca, the staff were very friendly and helpful and I really enjoyed the outside terrace with hanging beds, the atmosphere in the guesthouse was great as well. The only inconvenience was the noise coming from the street in our double room when we wanted to get to the bed earlier. Otherwise excellent value for money.

Delia, Simone, Gustav were lovely hosts. Very polite, helpful and fun! Simone took me to a cool local market and delia took me to a local theatre event. I was stuck in the hostel a lot because of the bad weather, but it was a chill place to hang out. Only complain- the basement dorms and the beds smell funny\musty because the rain. Totally triggered my allergies! But I'd deff stay here again. Great breakfast, wifi, lots of info about what to do etc...

We arrived later in the evening and the guy who checked us in was a bit odd. He gave us a map and showed us the area, but whenever we would ask him questions he seemed annoyed to help. Our room was big, with our own kitchen and bathroom but was filthy. Breakfast was gross. Stale bread, watermelon, and processed baloney. There was good wireless internet that we could use with our phones, which was a plus. There seemed to be better hostels in the area for the same price.

Owner Comment (Show)
I don't usually comment on guests reviews, because we are have the right to our own point of view, but in this case I simply cannot "resist". This review is full of half truths at best case and explicit lies at worst. The guy who checked them in is a French-Canadian called Simon and he has been working for me for over a year so i know EXACTLY how he works. If anything can be said against him is that maybe he is over friendly and sometimes gives too much information. They claimed the room was filthy. Filthy is usually a word used to describe something which is extremely dirty. I know for a fact this was not the case because the room they had is my house which is rented out when I'm away. And the worst were the accusations about the breakfast. Let me tell you what we serve every day for breakfast. Cheese, mortadela (or processed baloney as they called it), sliced tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, 2 types of fruits, fresh fruit juice, coffee, 5-6 types of tea, chocolate milk, Milk, 3 types of Jams, Doce de leite, biscuits, butter, filtered water and bread which we buy every morning at the bakery. This is the basics you get every day. On top of that we have a rotation between pancakes, french toast, eggs and donuts so each day you get something you didn't have the day before. If anyone defines all of this as gross, as they did, I surely would like to have the life style they have. We are actually famous around Brazil for the breakfast we give.. and if anyone reading this comment will stay with us and find that this is not true they can stay for free!!!! Breakfast is the best here! We really look forward to starting our day with the great food the hostel provides. Its a bit stormy, so the fun level wasn´t what I expected, but the Hostel provided us with great information for Salvador and surrounding areas. It´s too bad the USB drives on the computer do not work, as many travellers want to backup their pics and upload to blogs. Overall, great hostel!

The staff were very friendly and knew a lot about the area. The other travellers i met there were cool - a good mix of people. I could swing in that hammock all day! And on one morning the cook made us all pancakes which were delicious. Didnt really feel safe wandering around the area, but i guess thats just Salvador for you and not a lot can be done about that!

This place is fine if you're just going to be in and out - well located in the Pelorinho. But it iis cramped and poky - hardly any space in the dorm, and to make it worse everyone was crammed into one of the dorms while the other one was left empty. The terrace on the top is a nice place to sit, but could use some comfy lounges to rellax on. There is a sort of floor mat thing with cushions but it is absolutely filthy. On that note so are the bathrooms.
