Pura Vida is right by Copacabana beach, an easy 5 minute walk. Awesome. Located in a slightly ghetto area but we felt safe during our stay. Staff is great but breakfast is weak (you get one meager option to choose). If you are around, take a fotevolley lesson (25 reals) which was great. Be prepared to be yelled at (still was fun)! Definitely check out the night market that pops up beside Copacabana beach and of course, do all the touristy things (Christ, Sugarloaf, Ipanema, etc.).
The hostel is located on the street entrance to a favela, which was not clearly shown on the hostel description. I was travelling alone and did not feel safe here, so ended up not staying at the hostel and lost my deposit.
Amazing staff very helpful with information and friendly too. The atmosphere is awesome and they offer trips to most sites in and around Rio making it easier to explore. Met really interesting and friendly people. 2 blocks from Copacabana beach and really close to the metro and bustop.
Clean but over priced for what you get. I was here for the World Cup and overheard many many complaints at the front desk. They'll try and charge you an extra dollar at every chance they get - they charged my friend an additional 20 for borrowing the bolt cutter to remove her lock ! Breakfast is basic or you can pay more for what is generally included at other hostels.
Pura vida's staff are really helpful and pleasant and know a lot about the city. The hostel is in a really nice location and is surprisingly safe. We were a stone's throw away from copacabana and there are a lot of great restaurants around with easy access to buses to the center of town and to cash machines. The bar has a really good atmosphere too. The bathroom facilities are a bit cramped but definitely understandable based on the design of the building. No complaints here, you will enjoy it!

Awesome place! Really enjoyed my stay there. Staff are very helpful and there are many activities you can book through the hostel. Location is incredible - 5 min walk to copacabana and close to Ipenama's shores too, next to supermarket, restaurants, bus stop. Was kept clean through the busy world cup period which was great. Rooms are tidy. Either chill on the hammock on the balcony or drink away at the bar with an awesome barman! Highly recommend local favela tour and the hostel in general. A++
Great location - just a few blocks away from the beach. Great Staff. Although I stayed in this hostel whilst it was relatively empty, I sensed that this is a real party hostel. The hostel itself looks amazing inside and outside and has a real comforting feeling.
Nice location, nice building. The front desk staff could definitely be friendlier though. They're not friendly and not really clear about a lot of things. They even cancelled our tours a couple of times (last minute) and then told us about it with attitude. The doorbell is somewhat hidden & they won't buzz you in until you figure it out (even though they can see you on camera). Overall though, I think I would stay there again because of the location and the bar staff.
Overall a good stay, only complaint would be the club right underneath being extremely loud. I don't want to ruin the party, would just be nice to have more of a separation between the beds and the club noise-wise.

Really cool looking hostel...nice lounge area for unwinding along with a bar outside. Theirs a cool club underneath for partying. Free internet is clutch and cool deck connecting rooms upstairs. A Security guard during the club party wasnt cool at all but not the hostels fault. Good place, good location. Cheers, Philly Chris
The coolest hostel's I've ever stayed at. Clean, friendly, awesome Mayan/Portuguese architecture. Highly recommend staying here.
Nice building, good location, basic breakfast. It was very quiet while I was there - not much of a buzz.
Hostel is built on a hillside Was 100 steps to our Private room Kitchen Staff were very friendly Front desk staff were helpful when prompted
Very good location. Comfortable and quiet rooms however, when I was there the hostel was almost empty. Helpful and friendly staff, the only thing to improve is the breakfast.

No private bathroom in the privative dorms, shower down during the stay (staff worked it out during the stay!) breakfast partially included (choice between 4 complements to the minimalist part)
This is a party hotel on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, loud music until late. Not enough shared bathrooms, have to go into other dorm rooms to the bathroom. In serious need of new mattresses. Not enough cooking equipment, cutlery, plates etc for guests to use. Great location and staff. Nice breakfast. Could do with some basic maintenance on doors, bathrooms, security lockers etc.
I had a wonderful time at Pura Vida. Staff is friendly, facilities are good and it's perfect for socialising, I met amazing people there. Breakfast is just ok, not the best I have seen since you need to choose between fruit or sandwich, can't have both unless you pay extra. Overall, iy is a lovely place to stay and I would definitely come back again.
This is is the first hostel i`ve been to, that didn`t have any keys for the doorms. The rooms were just unlocked the whole entire time, random people were coming into our romm and just using our bathroom. That`s not cool in a place like Rio.
