The location is really good. The staff was nice and you'll get some towels, but the room and the bed sheets were full of black hair and some dirt. You should bring your own sleeping back. All in all, it's a nice hostel for a city trip.

Hostel was in a good location, unfortunately there is no kitchen on fridge, stove and microwave and very little space to actually prepare food. The staff were lovely, but if you are travelling by yourself and want to meet people i wouldn't stay here. There is no social aspect to the hostel, no social activities the communal rooms are small and not very inviting. My room i was put in was a 'twin private' which consisted of a bunk bed which i could hardly move around. Cheap, uneventful.

Hi Sarah: Hope you enjoyed your visit to Vancouver - which has so much to offer at this time of year. We do have fridges, microwaves, kettles & toasters on each floor - though no big kitchens as we are right downtown where you find lots of eating places, (including grocery stores & delis) Maybe next time you can stay in a dorm and meet other girls. Sorry your stay was 'uneventful' - hope the rest of your trip proved exciting. Best, Lorraine

Don't have kitchen, it is only a microwave.

Dear Lopez: Hope you enjoyed your trip to Vancouver and stay at The St. Clair. We do have, fridge, toaster, microwave, kettle on each floor for light meals & breakfast bar - sorry we don't provide full kitchens for frying - roasting & baking. Our area has so many reasonably priced restaurants & grocery stores with fabulous take out food that just needs heating. Enjoy the rest of your trip. Best, Lorraine

There is no A/C in our room or any rooms in the hostel, but I guess this is pretty common for hostels in Vancouver. However, the beds made everything worse. It was so hot at night that most of us had to sleep on the floor instead of the beds. The staff were friendly and informed, things were pretty okay inside the hostel. Lockers provided.

Dear Long Ha: Vancouver usually has cooler nights due to our 'sea breeze' which didn't materialize during these hot days - so sorry Best, Lorraine

Dear Soyoung: - Thanks for your comments -" very good, all of them awesome" really appreciated. We try hard with the cleaning - sometimes a guest leaves a mess & it takes us a little time to find out - we will try to keep on top of this. Best, Lorraine

I had to wait for almost an hour before my room was finished being cleaned after being told it would be ready by 2pm. It was very hot in the rooms when I was there in summer, even with the window open. Also, since I had to sleep with the window open the noises from the seagulls and crows in the neighbouring ally woke me up every morning.

Owner Comment (Hide)
Dear Luke: Sorry about the wait for your room - this is most unusual, unfortunately you stayed at the busiest time of year with all Vancouver's activities (fireworks, festivals etc) the hostels are all filled to capacity. Also we've had exceptionally hot weather. Hope you did enjoy Vancouver and The St. Clair. Best, Lorraine

Waited along time to check in as our room was not ready. Not really a hostel atmosphere more like a hotel, but in a good location. Staff were pleasant and room was generally clean. Lack of facilities and no breakfast included. Place felt dated!

Hi Hannah: Thanks for your comments - we're really trying hard to have all rooms ready by 2:00pm - we do take in your luggage while you wait so you may visit our city. You can always make yourself tea at our 'breakfast stations' and make your own breakfast - just bring in what you like to eat - there''s a good grocery store close by. Our prices reflect the fact that breakfast is not included (which is usually the case with most hostels in Vancouver). Hope you enjoyed Vancouver.

It is a good place to stay right in the middle of the city center. The rooms and the beds are comfortable and the staff was nice.

No lights in the shower and bathroom on our floor during our stay which was annoying. They were onto fixing it though.Great location, Good wifi. No kitchen but there is a toaster and microwave. Had to wait for the toilet a couple times. Great location and a nice stay for what we needed.

Owner Comment (Hide)
Glad you enjoyed your stay - sorry the lights in our 100+ year old building decided to 'act up' - now fixed on the third floor . There are not usually wait times for toilets - as they are on all three floors, but this is a very busy time of year in Vancouver with so many activities, festivals, fireworks, etc. taking place. . Hope to see you again. Best, Lorraine

I stayed in a private double with my boyfriend at the hostel which was fine for the two nights we were there. However it was way too hot at night as the rooms aren't equipped with fans and there isn't much air flow throughout the hostel. Also the lights didn't work in the shower so we had to have showers in the dark. Apart from that the staff were helpful and it was in a great location

Hi Olivia: Thanks for your comments - sorry you had to stay during our westcoast heat wave - usually we have a nice ocean breeze at night. Lights now fixed & also we've added some fans. Best, Lorraine - St. Clair Hostel

No A/C in room, hotter than outside (mid July). Woke up in my own sweat. No plug-ins by each bed. Only 1 surge protector in corner of room but mostly used up by room lamp & small fan. No 24hr reception, flight landed after 10:30pm. Number to call outside front door, staff member that answered was very helpful. Staff at reception in morning at checkout very unenthusiastic, seemed uninterested in assisting w/checkout process. Great location, other than that not too impressed.

Hi Ryan: Sorry we're not up to your standards - most older buildings in Vancouver do not have A/C - and if it wasn't for the heat wave there would normally be an ocean breeze, we're all looking forward to a little cooler spell. We will try harder with checkout process, thanks for bringing this up. Best, Lorraine

Good location with walking distance to all important places in the city. Rooms are ok. A bit old, but clean. My room facing the street was quite noisy. But over all, good value.

Dear Goran: Glad you enjoyed your stay - hope to see you again. The St. Clair was built in 1911 - the first reinforced concrete building in Vancouver - to accommodate 'budget' travelers, so its understandable that it looks a 'bit old' We do however try to keep it up and show its history from the stained glass windows above every door to pictures of ocean liners in honour of Captain Henry Pybus who built the St. Clair. Thanks for your comments. Lorraine

This Hostel is more like a cheap hotel that is excellently located in dowtown vancouver near gastown. would recommend but we preferred the rooms on the top floor away from the loud creaky staircase

Owner Comment (Hide)
Dear Jonathan: Thanks for your comments - Glad you liked our 'excellent location - our staircase can be a little loud with so many travelers with their heavy luggage going up & down, but didn't think it was 'creaky' - though carpets are quieter they just don't stand up to the wear & tear. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Vancouver. Best, Lorraine
