Narrow space, wood built is more dangerous for living. Quiet and convenient near bus station and supermarket.

We stayed in the annex. The annex had very limited facilities, very thin walls and our room had no external Windows and the Windows we had faced the main hall way with no real curtain. We could hear the people in the room next to us whisper. I would not stay here again as it is just too loud to get a proper sleep. The location is good. Wall beams are very low and we constantly hit our heads on doorways. This is not a traditional ryokan. Host was very nice.

We enjoyed our stay in the old area of Kyoto and saw a number of geisha.

We decided to stay here because it was less expensive than other options, and we felt that the drawbacks mentioned by other reviewers would be worth it - such as shared bathroom, thin walls etc. In the end it was totally fine and a good spot for our week in Kyoto. Rooms are a bit small but we spent a lot of time out anyway. I recommend STRONGLY going to Cafe Sagan about five mins away for the most delicious salmon or bacon and eggs you've ever had for breakfast.
