Great hostel with a party vibe. They have a nice happy hour and you can't beat the $7.50 beer and chili dinner special. The staff is also super helpful and friendly and helped us to book the Tongariro Hike and a boat ride. The hour of free wifi also comes in handy but if you need more you can always buy unlimited 24 hours for $4 which isn't too bad. They also have parking which was a plus for us.

Great hostel and remarkably helpful staff. Only problems were that the rooms had no ventilation (granted they did have individual air conditioning) and the beds were unusually uncomfortable.

my room is a little narrow.and,i can't use the ladder of my bed.because,the ladder faced the wall.but,staff is friendly and kind,and i could get free wifi on their computer for one hour.they prepared $5 meal for dinner and cheap beers.their survive is very nice! meal for dinner and cheap beers.

This place was ok....if you were travelling on a Stray bus! My boyfriend and I were travelling independently and felt like we weren't as important as the hordes of Stray travellers that turned up every day (apart from Sunday). The staff were a bit cold and slightly unhelpful, although perhaps they would have been different if we'd been travelling with Stray! The rooms and the kitchen were also extremely small, so they wouldn't be practical if you wanted to do more than sleep there.

Great little hostel, wouldn't stay anywhere else in Taupo

We stayed two times in a double room in this hostel. The room is good size, with very comfy beds and a small ensuite bathroom.

i had a great time at taupo urban retreat. the hostel has a very nice size, i got to know a lot of people and the chili-dinners are an excellent idea! plus, you can rent a bike and lake taupo is just around the corner. thank you! :)

Taupo Urban Retreat was the best hostel that we stayed in during our trip. The staff was very helpful with planning things to do and the overall atmosphere was a good one.

I only stayed here one night and I didnt spend a huge amount of time at the hostel itself. The girl on rcepetion was amazing however, very helpful and friendly and the I would of been happy to have stayed there addiotnal nights if i had more time. The rooms were clean and comfortable however there was alot of noise in the alleyway behind in the mornning that meant you couldnt sleep much past 6.30am!!!

I had a problem with the cleanliness, my sheets were covered with long blonde hair. I felt gross sleeping here. It was a very young environment that had a big screen tv and a bar. I didn't subtract any points from the atmosphere, it just wasn't what I like.

Awesome hostel! Definitely stay here. Perfect location, helpful staff, and a good set up for meeting people and having fun. The bar is cheap too! I will stay here again, definitely.

Quite a large hostel that caters for the Stray & Oz Experience crowd which makes it quite lively. Good atmosphere though and really easy to meet people. The rooms are small and crowded, wi limited showers available given the people but the Internet is free and unlimited. Good location, although there is limited sights to see in Taupo apart from at 12,000 feet skydiving. Good place for the alpine crossing, but there are closer places. Beer is cheapest in town and 5 buck meal is filling.

Great place for exploring Taupo

This hostel is only recommendable when you want to sleep next to the bar, because the rooms are next to the in-house bar! If you are up for drinking and partying this is the right backpackers, but I wasn't prepared for that and I hadn't read anything about it in the description. It was friendly staff that apologised for the rude behavior of my roommates, but that didn't make up for the lost sleep the night before.
