About

Right on buzzing Király Street, Wombat’s City Hostel Budapest is the city’s biggest and most-loved hostel. Set in a beautifully restored 19th-century building (and a former four-star hotel!), it combines historic charm with modern comfort and a famously social vibe.

Choose between spacious private rooms or clean, comfy dorms (including female-only). Every room has an en-suite bathroom and air con. All dorm beds are equipped with personal curtains and individual fans for extra comfort and privacy. There’s 24/7 reception, smart-card access, laundry, lockers, and plenty of communal space to hang out with other travelers.

Kickstart your day with our “Tasty Brekkie” buffet (vegan options + unlimited coffee, tea, and hot chocolate), then chill in the cozy WomCAFÉ or head to the lively WomBAR for drinks and fun events.

And the location? Couldn’t be better. We’re steps away from the ruin pubs and the Jewish Quarter nightlife, and within walking distance of the State Opera, Heroes’ Square, and Old Town. Deák Ferenc tér, Budapest’s main transport hub with three metro lines, is just minutes away.

overall, the hostel is very nice. the only thing I might improve is to have more social activities or a more cozy common room. since the hostel is so big, you won't see the same people often and it's a little hard to meet people that way. otherwise, everything was perfect, the rooms are big, everything is clean and I felt really safe during my entire stay

Surprised this is the top-rated hostel in Budapest. Pros: Great location near food, shops, and safe streets. Front desk staff (especially a cool local girl) were super nice and made exchanging a bad-smelling towel easy. Cons: Overpriced cafe and an old, musty, school-like vibe with tile floors. The 4-bed dorm felt empty with high ceilings, bunk beds, and only 1 rack—forcing bags onto the floor. Guests slept naked without sheets directly on vinyl mattresses, and there’s no hand soap by the sink.

Hostelworld says

We like the very central location of Wombats City Hostel Budapest, just a block from Andrassy utca and five minutes from a metro station serving three lines going to Buda, the airport stop and the three main train stations. This friendly, clean hostel opened in 2012 in a former hotel. It features spacious ensuite rooms with free air conditioning, and a budget-friendly all-you-can-eat breakfast with yoghurt, fruit and good bread.
