Right on buzzing Király Street, Wombat’s City Hostel Budapest is the city’s biggest and most-loved hostel. Set in a beautifully restored 19th-century building (and a former four-star hotel!), it combines historic charm with modern comfort and a famously social vibe.

Choose between spacious private rooms or clean, comfy dorms (including female-only). Every room has an en-suite bathroom and air con. All dorm beds are equipped with personal curtains and individual fans for extra comfort and privacy. I’ve been in a lot of hostels as a solo-traveler and this is one of the best I’ve stayed in, in every aspect. I would definitely stay here again when I come back to Budapest.

Great hostel with fantastic facilities, beds super comfortable with curtains and fans, great laundry, locker room service and huge kitchen. I feel like it was missing a bit of community just as it was such a large hostel, and the staff didn’t really tell you about any hostel events. No hostel events or activities organised around Budapest, which would have made it a bit more social. A QR code for a walking tour not running. Bar was social during happy hour, overall great for a nice place to stay

We like the very central location of Wombats City Hostel Budapest, just a block from Andrassy utca and five minutes from a metro station serving three lines going to Buda, the airport stop and the three main train stations. This friendly, clean hostel opened in 2012 in a former hotel. It features spacious ensuite rooms with free air conditioning, and a budget-friendly all-you-can-eat breakfast with yoghurt, fruit and good bread.
