About

The Hamakua House is a rustic guest house located on the south end of Hawaii's breathtaking Hamakua Coast. Make your next getaway greener by staying in this off-the-grid house. Our house is 'off-the-grid' which means that we get all of our electricity from the sun and all of our water is collected from the rain. We are not connected to the island's grid power system. Our solar panels charge a large bank of deep cycle batteries all day in order for us to have power around the clock. The Hamakua Coast (Hawaii's 'green' side of the island) is the perfect place for an adventure vacation.

Easily accessible to all the Big Island attractions such as Volcanoes National Park (1 hour South), Waipio Valley (1 hour North), and the countless sights and adventures along the Hamakua Coast, the Hamakua House is the perfect location to base your Big Island adventure vacation. Located about 9 miles (13 minutes drive) North of Hilo (Hawaii's second largest city), the Hamakua House is remote and peaceful, while still being a short drive to amenities such as stores, restaurants, and galleries.

We offer a series of private (double occupancy) rooms with shared baths great for couples, individuals, or families. Shared bathroom with shower and tub. Access: our full kitchen, the common room (with a Netflix TV), our common dining room, our washing machine (hang dry clothes), and free WiFi.

I'm so glad we decided to stay here! The hammocks were surprisingly comfortable. I slept great each night and woke up with the sunrise coming through the cabana and the roosters crowing in the distance. All amenities were perfectly adequate for our needs. I would definitely stay here again!

It has charm, but the place doesn't seem well kept. Signs are everywhere to help you navigate the space which is helpful. There's no microwave and the fridge is SUPER tiny with nobody following the assigned spaces. Hammocks are itchy and the lagoon area is not easy to get to or well labeled once you make it past the bamboo gate near 2 other houses.

It was my first time sleeping in a hammock and I loved it. The area is really peaceful and the starry sky in the night is just amazing there. You can also see the sunrise right from your cabin. I would definitely stay here again.
