This quirky, clean, comfortable and quiet hostel is set in a historic former jail. It's located about 20 minutes' walk from the Arts Centre, Christchurch Art Gallery, Canterbury Museum and the Botanic Gardens and is surrounded by a variety of bars and cafes. First time I have stayed in a backpacker's with such interesting history! Within easy reach of train station, shops, parks, restaurants and more. Helpful friendly staff, Good facilities. Appreciated that guests were asked not to be noisy or disturb others who might be sleeping.

Overall great stay in an interesting atmosphere. Wifi in the room doesn't work due to the thick concrete walls.

REALLY good value for money. Rooms are quite small, but in good nick. The staff know the area well and are happy to point out good, close-by spots. My one gripe is that, as a converted jail, WiFi isn't brilliant within the actual rooms' concrete walls, although there's heaps of common seating where signal is better and it never feels too crowded. Not a poncy luxurious experience, but comfortable, enjoyable, and - I repeat - REALLY good value for money.

Interesting idea, would have been nice to stay longer and take everything in more. Staff were nice and vibe was relaxed. Got very cold at night in winter but they provide extra blankets and hot water bottles.

I love that the first category for the rating is "security"........it's a jail! We stayed in winter, and I was a little concerned it might be chilly, but the bedrooms had heaters and there were plenty of bedclothes, so it was cosy in the cells. We stayed with 2 children and were able to have 2 cells with connecting door, which was ideal. Staff were friendly and helpful. Great place to stay for the novelty value. I'd have preferred if there were male and female toilets on each floor.

Clean with a cool ass vibe. Plenty of places to chill, either to watch a movie or play pool. There is no soundproofing of any kind so 9pm is the start of quiet time. 100% will recommend.
