Property Description

Come join us under the volcanoes! La Iguana Perdida has been an oasis on the shores of Lake Atitlán for over twenty years now offering memories to travellers both young and old while maintaining commitment to community, the environment, and the betterment of our village of Santa Cruz La Laguna. We’re your home away from home whether you come here to learn to dive, hike the trails, study Spanish, experience Mayan culture or simply lie in a hammock with a paperback or enjoy doing nothing at all.

Our rooms range from simple to downright luxurious, so whether you’re travelling with your a hand-me-down backpack or a shiny new roley bag we’ve got something for you. We’ve got three dormitories with 22 beds in total, several single/double rooms with shared bath facilities nearby, and ten more modern rooms with private bath. Many of our rooms and common areas have fantastic lake views as we’re located right on the waterfront.

Our lakefront restaurant is open from 8AM - 3PM daily offering breakfasts & lunches aimed to satisfy the hungry traveler. Egg dishes, crepes, fruit, sandwiches, salads and our famous licuados are just some of the options you can choose from. We make as much as humanly possible from scratch (from bread, granola to sauces and pastries) and all our fruit and vegetables are locally sourced or grown in our garden.

Dinner is served at 7:00 and the fixed menu is a delicious 3-course meal consisting of soup with homemade bread, a main course (vegetarian option always available), and coffee, tea & cake for dessert. Our family-style dinners often lead to hours of storytelling, board games, very bad jokes, guitars & sing-alongs and are often noted as one of the highlights of people's time here.

Our famous Saturday costume dress-up party and BBQ is a night you won’t soon forget. We’ll fire up the grill while you rummage through our costume closet. On the buffet you’ll find marinated chicken or veggie burgers and a huge selection of side dishes and salads, followed by our famous chocolate brownies for dessert.

The bar is open every day and night for sodas, beer, wine, spirits, home-made liqueurs and specialty cocktails. Sunday through Thursday happy hour runs from 6pm - 7pm and on Fridays and Saturdays 5pm -7pm. Happiness is often permitted outside of happy hour.

When the Iguana opened back in 1996, the set up was humble and homey. We had no electricity and no hot water, but as time has gone on we have updated our lovely little paradise in order to accommodate the future. We do offer WiFi on the property in select public areas!

Scuba diving in a volcanic lake! The Iguana has been home to the only dive shop on Lake Atitlán for more than 20 years. ATI Divers offers PADI courses from Open Water on up, the altitude specialty course, and fun dives or refreshers on demand. Lake Atitlan is a collapsed volcanic caldera, so it's something fun and different for those feeling intrepid. Sunken buildings, spectacular volcanic rock formations and hot spots along the fault line are just some of the cool things to experience under the water.

There are plenty of other activities to fill your days here including yoga classes, swimming, kayaking, weaving, hiking trails, pool table and dartboard, book exchange and TV room, and visits to local markets and to CECAP, the Santa Cruz vocational center.

Amazing views, delicious food, clean rooms, great diving, and world-class laziness are all here waiting for you! View House Rules

Incredibly friendly staff, fantastic food, great accommodations at a reasonable price. Ended up extending my stay because this is easily the best hostel I’ve stayed at. Try and attend the dress up party on Saturday if you can, it was a blast.

Incredible place!! So many plants and amazing common areas to chill. I fell in love the moment I entered. I stayed in the no-electricity treehouse and LOVED it-it is like magic. Many opportunities to explore town (as well as the adjacent towns) and chat with locals, share hostel dinner with everyone, and bask in the sun. Staff are incredibly genuine and sweet.

great location and vibe, extended my stay a lot longer than expected! the rooms are nice and have lots of blankets for if it gets cold. They open a tab for you so super easy to get food/drinks and just pay at the end. There aren’t really many other places to eat nearby and the food at the hostel was a bit bland sometimes but overall pretty good :) would definitely return here!

Amazing hostel, with a super chilled vibe and a beautiful view. Stayed in 2 different private rooms which were both lovely. They do family dinner which is amazing with such great food and great setting with candles everywhere! Their Saturday costume party is one to check out. Deedle and the staff are super friendly and helpful. The one improvement would be the bathhrooms with a bit more upkeep, and the hot water was questionable.

I really really wanna say Thank you to everyone at La Iguana. I Spent a week in this Hostel to celebrate my BD and I got what I wanted 🤗 I would’ve liked more approach/interaction from the volunteers to the guests because sometimes they just disappeared out of the blue and would have been great to have them more time sharing with guests not only from dress up party or family dinner. I loved this hostel, situated on a lake flanked by two volcanoes. The staff were lovely and they have a bar tab system so everthing is added to that and you pay at the end. Great food and drinks and a nice place to chill out. I wanted to stay for longer :( I will hopefully return one day

This is more of a younger hostel (early 20s as opposed to mid or late) in my opinion. I loved the family dinners here, but the wifi was the worst I encountered during my stay in Guatemala.

The volunteers were amazing! Views cannot be beat. Very quiet little town. Was more expensive than a 5 star hotel and Guatemala city and a 4 star hotel in Antigua. The dinners were delicious and so fun to meet everyone. I would stay again, but not in the luxury room, while the views are nice I would say it wasn't the best value - it's still a hostel so no one is going to come in and clean the room or put fresh towels etc.

Pretty chilled vibe, the staff was really nice and the food was great. We had a private room that could have done with some proper cleaning, it was quite dusty to be fair. Also you could literally hear every word from the people staying below us, so don't expect much (if any) privacy and maybe opt for the dorm instead and save yourself some money.
