Property Description

The greatest view and the quietest environment you can imagine! The Hostel 'Pousada Favelinha' is located on a small mountain in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, between the district of Laranjeiras and the hip Santa Teresa. It is situated inside a small 'Favela', one of the many 'poor' districts that Rio has got. However, it is not 'poor' in cultural terms, and it is absolutely secure! This is the first and original Favela Hostel in all of Brazil! Since 2004!

This is the first project of its kind and one of the best opportunities to experience the tranquil life in a favela. All of the approximately 3000 inhabitants of the favela will great you in a very friendly way, and you will find lots of friends among other backpackers as well as among the people who live near our hostel.

We have five double rooms, one suite, and one dorm room. All rooms have a balcony with beautiful views, with a hammock on each balcony. They also all have private baths, and a big tropical breakfast is included in the price. A large living room and a huge (120 m) rooftop terrace is part of the hostel. Bananas, jack fruit, passion fruit etc. grow in the garden. As there is no car traffic anywhere nearby, about the only sounds you will hear is from the humming birds or the occasional rooster in the morning ;)

Still, you are only a five minute walk from either the metro station at 'Largo do Machado' which will take you to the Copacabana beach in only another 7 minutes, or from the 'bondinho', the old little cable car which runs through the beautiful artists district in Santa Teresa and right down to the center of Rio and the nightlife district 'Lapa'.

Check out our video on the hostelworld site, and related videos on youtube to see the environment!

Since there are no roads in front of our hostel, the only thing you will have to put up with is walking a small hill up (or down, wherever you come from) to reach home. This paths leads you through so many beautiful houses and trees, playing children, and old women chatting, that you would wish your stay was longer...

The favela is secured by police and by the proper inhabitants. It has been absolutely quiet for the past 15 years, and many special programs guarantee it to stay this way.

If you are looking for something very special during your stay in Rio, come to the Hostel Favelinha and experience Rio de Janeiro the way only very few foreigners ever see it! The German owner Holger together with the Finnish tourguide Matti and the friendly Brazilian staff around Solange heartily welcome you to the place where dreams come true!

Stay here if you are coming to Rio. Staying in a favela has been the best experience ever. Everyone here has been so welcoming and helpful, it has the best view of the city and is located really close to a Metro station. It is SO easy to do everything in Rio from here, breakfast is incredible and the favela has resatraunts and bars which as really good! We extended our stay from 4 days to a week!

A wonderful hostel with an unbeatable view. We stayed in a private room which was clean, quiet and spacious. Matti and Solange were superb hosts and even walked us down the Favela passing the Morrinho Project. WiFi was strong, showers hot and our favourite hostel in South America. It’s perfectly SAFE and the locals were super friendly. Highly recommended and a unique experience.

We had a brilliant stay at Pousada Favelinha! Greg was super friendly and welcoming and helped us every day by showing us where to go, how best to get there etc. Hostel itself has a great atmosphere (again thanks to Greg), quote small which is nice because you can get to know others. View is stunning and kitchen is open to all. Breakfast is great, would highly recommend.

An unforgettable experience to be amongst the real Rio lifestyle, why do a favela tour when you can stay in one! This hostel is perfect to kick off or end your Rio trip, as it's tucked away in a favela with awesome views you will stare out and chill at all day and night. There is a bar and restaurant next door in the favela itself so you never really need to leave it. And ofcourse the hosts Matti and Solange will go above and beyond to make it a great and safe stay. Cheers guys!

Sol and her team are amazing and do all they can to make sure you are comfortable! She went above and beyond when I needed to book an extra person last minute. The breakfast was always good, views were amazing, and walking around the Favela day and night (during Carnaval even) I always felt safe and had no issues. The people in the Favelah are friendly and pointed me in the right direction twice when I didnt know which turn to take to get to the hostel.Great place!

The only reason to stay here would be the view from the hostel itself - it's genuinely world class. Everything else, however, from facilities to security (had a gun pulled on me walking back down into the favela from Santa Teresa) is pretty average. Atmosphere was absolutely dead even though it was Rock In Rio at the time. Would definitely recommend staying elsewhere and coming into the favela during the day when it's safer to enjoy the restaurant next door and the view.

As a solo female traveller this is not the hostel to go to. Matti and Solange are lovely people but getting to and from the hostel in the evenings is an anxiety producing thought! There is no car access so I, on several occasions, had to cut my days short to make sure I got to the hostel before sunset as I felt unsafe walking to the location dark alone. This hostel is also not equipped for organising tourist activities so if you do stay here ensure you know what you're doing in Rio prior!

This was the worse hostel experience EVER the directions was awful and when we finally got the what I believe to be the hostel it was full according to the person at the door. I would highly recommend to avoid staying here and I’ll be trying to get my deposit back
