Property Description

Newly opened in January 2018, The Bristol Wing was built in the refurbished Grade II listed old police headquarters in the heart of Bristol City Centre. We have a mix of private, ensuite and dorm rooms with great communal spaces on the ground floor and an award winning cafe on site offering tasty breakfast, great coffee and a super fresh lunch menu.

Our ethical and environmental credentials are second to none. We have a newly refurbed building designed to minimise our negative impact on the world (solar panels, high levels of insulation, double glazed windows etc). All of our food is sourced locally and we offer opportunities for young people to gain valuable work skills and experience.

The Bristol Wing is owned and managed by YMCA Bristol as a social enterprise - so any profits we make are reinvested in supporting young people who are homeless in the city.

The Bristol Wing is slap bang in the middle of Bristol City Centre. We are a stone’s throw from Bristol Bus Station, 20 minutes’ walk from Temple Meads Railway Station and only meters away from local bus stops. Bristols best shopping is on the door step, whether you want the independent shops of Park Street and Clifton, the big name brands in Cabot Circus or quirky market stalls in St Nicholas's Market, we're with walking distance. Bristol's historic harbour side is only ten minutes’ walk.

Ideally suited to single travellers, couples and families we have a mixture of rooms including dorm rooms, double rooms and family rooms - some with shared bathrooms and some ensuite.

Overview

Fun fact about The Bristol Wing: we're based in a Grade II-listed old police headquarters. But don't worry, we're super fun and friendly! We recently renovated with a focus on being ethically and environmentally sound, so we can have as positive an impact on the world as possible – think solar panels, insulation, double-glazing. And all the food sold in our on-site café is locally sourced (though we've also got a small kitchen if you prefer to make your own snacks). We're owned by YMCA Bristol as a social enterprise, so all our profits go to supporting homeless young people in our city – how cool is that?

Location

We're right in the heart of Bristol, so if you're coming from the airport you can take the Bristol Airport Flyer bus to Bristol bus station – from there we're just a 3-minute walk. If you're arriving by train, we're a 20-minute walk from Temple Meads station. Bristol's best shopping is all within a 15-minute walk, whether you want indie shops, big-name brands or quirky market stalls. Be sure to pick up a free city map from reception to get your bearings quickly.

Rooms and Dorms

We've got a mix of dorm rooms and private rooms, some with en-suites – whatever you choose, you'll get bed linen for free. Complimentary Wi-Fi is also included, and you'll have a security locker to keep your electronics safe. Getting around with your luggage is super-easy too, as we have an elevator to all floors.

Extras and activities

If you're looking to relax after a day on the Harbourside – or a long night in Bristol's nightlife quarters – head over to one of our common areas for some downtime. There's plenty of comfy seating to lounge on, so check out our book exchange to find your new favourite read. There're also board games if that's more your style.

I stayed just an overnight, but the place is very nice and clean. The staff is cool. Marco was very helpful and the girl with cool & curly hair very friendly (hey guys!). Decent facilities and the location is convenient. One downside for me was that you have to make your bed and I was checking in very late when everyone was asleep. Basically, I could not make my bed properly in the dark without disturbing everyone. Ended up sleeping in a mess:) So try to check in earlier! Otherwise, cool place!

We had a wonderful stay at the Bristol Wing. Thoroughly recommend this place, the staff couldn’t do enough for us! We had a massive, comfortable bedroom with a spotless new ensuite . There was a slight problem with the sink but staff responded very well. Our bikes were very well secured in basement so we had peace of mind. Good kitchen facilities or a self catering breakfast at a good price. Great location in the city centre but in a very quiet position. Would stay there again - thanks!!

Lovely hostel, very welcoming. Came back on Thursday night and was offered something to eat for free! Got a private room and it was such good value for money.

Clean, modern hostel in a great location. Not great when staff put us in the wrong room, wasted 15 mins. Our private double room was very noisy, with noise coming from above and outside. The room itself was very clean and the ensuite was lovely. However, our double bed was two single mattresses put together which made it uncomfortable.

    Fabulous

They had really nice common areas and friendly staffs and the location is fabulous. However, the toilets/showers weren’t enough for the rooms. For 3 6 people’s dorms there are only 2 showers with toilets inside. Hence you tend to see people queuing outside for them. Also the mattresses are made with plastic covers and in the summer it was boiling to sleep in them and far too soft for the back so I had a bit of back pain afterwards.

The reception, location and proximity with the Kitchen were great. I enjoyed the curtains for the bed. I didn't like the fact that there were 2 bathrooms for 4 dormitories. Bathrooms were not very clean or well equipped.

    Good

Good location to the main attractions. The kitchen space to cook is extreme small, only one guest at a time can actually cook something. The beds are not very comfortable and the room was very very hot (even the temperature outside were like 20°C). The cleanliness is ok, might be better. Nice staff, helpful.

Beds were uncomfortable, squeaky and noise outside the window was loud - I was sandwiched in the middle of a 3 bed bunk. It is a very confined space - the height from the bottom of the mattress to the top of the bed above you would be approx. 60cm so you can't actually sit up in bed. The pillow supplied was very flat. The washrooms were limited (only 2 per floor) and messy. Toilet wasn't working and no hand soap in one. No social vibe & staff weren't overly friendly or helpful. Not recommended.
