Overview

Get a feel for old-school Cartagena at Viajero Cartagena Hostel, set inside a revamped 19th-century house in the walled city. Start every day with our free breakfast before strolling into the historic centre to take in churches and museums, cool coffee shops and local handicrafts. Right outside our door, rainbow-painted colonial buildings line the streets and flowers cascade from our neighbours' balconies. Snap some shots to share with friends back home and then send them using our free Wi-Fi.

Location

We're just 10 minutes by taxi from Rafael Núñez International Airport – don't be afraid to get into some friendly haggling with your driver over the price! Or you can hop on a local bus and be with us in 25 minutes. Once you're here, the historic city centre is just a 10-minute walk away. You can easily reach major attractions like the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas (15 minutes on foot), or stick around the walled city for local hangouts like Plaza Fernandez Madrid.

Rooms and Dorms

You'll get free linen and air con whether you go for a dorm or a private room. Lockable chests keep your valuables safe while you sleep and when you're out on the town. For extra luxury, book a private double or a large dorm with an en-suite bathroom. Women have the choice of bunking with the guys in a mixed dorm or taking one of our female-only rooms instead.

Extras and activities

Grab a drink at our outdoor, on-site bar or flop down in front of a box set in our comfy TV room. There's no better place for an afternoon nap than a hammock on one of the two patios – and the outdoor terrace is also where you'll find local dance lessons (think: salsa, bachata, champeta), open mic nights and games of beer pong. Give your favourite T-shirts a well needed wash with our laundry service so you can keep wearing them every day!

Comfortable place with great places on the patios to relax. I did not appreciate the loud music that was played every night until 12am. The speaker was mounted on the other side of our bedroom wall and was very loud. I think the music was unnecessary, or if played at all play it only until 10pm, which is usually when quiet hours are. It was hard to fall asleep between the music and loud talking. Take note, quiet hour does not start until 12am! Otherwise the say was good.

Clean hostel with comfy beds. We stayed in an 8 bed dorm and there was plenty of space for bags &moving around. Hostel bar was a nice place to hang out. The kitchen is very small and not much space to prepare food however if you just want to make something quick it’s fine. Staff were friendly. They offer a discount at other viajero hostels if you book at the front desk however it did take them forever to sort the booking for me, maybe something that needs some work with their systems.

It's a nice place. Just watch out if they put you in dorm 1, you can hear the doorbell for the front door all through the night, not ideal.

The staff were great at this hostel. Friendly and hard working. Facilities clean, especially given the type of traveler who tends to pass through. I call this a "trainer hostel," though. This means most individuals were learning what it means to be quiet if you have to pack or leave at 5:00 a.m. (note: you whisper and pack the night before) or learning to pick up after themselves (using ashtrays, wiping down the showers). So if you stay here, please start practicing! Travelers thank you.

    Very Good

Pros: Good showers, good wifi and good a/c. Comfy beds, each dorm bed has its own light and plug. Cons: We stayed three nights in a dorm and had to move into a different one each night which seemed annoyingly unnecessary. The a/c is switched off during the day. No water refills and no outside alcohol allowed.

Viajero Hostels need to put an effort on their hostels, I hope they can learn from HostelOne, They are good, but they definitely can be way better. Thanks a lot.

Stayed here for two nights as female solo traveler. Staff was really nice, room was clean, AC working properly. However, the showers were with very bad water pressure, almost impossible to get shampoo out of your hair. The place was pretty, but currently under big construction. WiFi was working well. Area is very touristic, would rather stay in Getsemani next time. Place was totally lacking any atmosphere, people were mostly on their phones all the time, didn’t say hi etc, which is sad.

    Good

Walked in and the two girls at the desk didn't look up or acknowledge me (I was only guest there), one of them never even looked up from her phone the whole time. Then pretty much the first thing they said is "you can't check in until 2!".. I know it's the rule but maybe some customer service would be good when someone is standing there tired and dripping in sweat. I can't say anything about the dorms, but can say private room is not worth it here! Bad quality w/ shared bathrooms and loud.
