Wales’ capital city Cardiff is a great destination for backpackers. The city has the most green space per person in the UK and has become very popular due to its rich history, lively Welsh culture, big sporting events and modern waterfront area with hip cafes, restaurants and bars.

Cardiff has a lot of cheap accommodation options. Most of the youth hostels in the capital city of Wales are in the city centre, within a walking distance from Cardiff Central station. The city centre is home to most hostels in Cardiff. From there you can easily walk to Bute Park to explore the Cardiff Castle grounds. Be sure to head to Cardiff Bay, a modern waterside space for restaurants, bars and cultural events, or even a boat trip!

Cardiff is known as the city of castles, having five in the vicinity of the city. The most well-known of them is Cardiff Castle, medieval castle built in the late 11th century on a Roman fort. For sport lovers, Principality Stadium, the home of the Welsh rugby and football teams, is a must-see. Relax in the green Bute Park, one of the UK’s largest urban parks.

The compact city centre is easy to explore by foot. The city is pretty flat so cycling is also an option. Bus fares are low but make sure to have correct change or use the mobile ticket, as bus drivers don’t give change back. Cardiff Central train station links the Welsh capital to other main cities in the UK.
