🇫🇷 Hostels in France: way more than just Paris
France is one of Europe's most rewarding countries to travel — and there's a lot more to it than the capital. You've got world-class food in Lyon, wine country around Bordeaux, Atlantic surf on the Basque coast, Mediterranean beaches on the Riviera and the Alps at Chamonix, all linked by one of the best high-speed rail networks on the continent. It's easy to string together a proper trip here, city to coast to mountains, on trains that actually run on time. Compare 2 hostels in La Rochelle on Hostelworld, all backed by real traveller reviews to help you book the right bed in 2026.
🤝 Where you'll meet people
French hostels lean social without being full-on party central — think rooftop terraces, shared kitchens, bar nights and walking tours where you fall in with people over a cheap bottle of wine. In the big cities you'll share dorms with travellers from all over Europe and beyond, and hostel bars and organised nights make it easy to team up whether you're passing through for two days or a week.
If you like plans before you land, the Hostelworld app adds a nice head start: book a bed and you're dropped into that hostel's in-app chat, plus nearby Linkups — free meet-ups where solo travellers find their crowd in a new city. Solo, but never on your own.
📍 Where to stay in France
France is big and varied, so most travellers pick a few stops and let the trains do the work:
🗼 Paris — the essential first stop: iconic sights, great nightlife and the biggest hostel scene in the country.
🍽️ Lyon — France's food capital, and a handy halfway point between Paris and the south.
🍷 Bordeaux — elegant wine city with easy trips to the coast and the Dune du Pilat.
🏄 Biarritz — the Atlantic surf town on the Basque coast, full of surf hostels.
⛵ Marseille — a gritty, real port city and the gateway to the Calanques.
🌴 Nice — the French Riviera base for beaches, Monaco and Cannes.
🏔️ Chamonix — the Mont Blanc adventure hub for skiing in winter and hiking in summer.
Most travellers start in Paris, add Lyon or Bordeaux, then head south to the Riviera or west to the surf coast.
🛏️ What are hostels like in France?
Hostels in La Rochelle usually mix shared dorms, private rooms, communal kitchens and social common areas, often with a bar or rooftop in the bigger cities. Pod-style dorm beds with curtains, lights and lockers are increasingly common, and female-only dorms are widely available. Expect central locations near train stations, since so much travel here is by rail.
Paris and the Riviera are pricier than the rest of the country, so dorms are the smart budget move there. On the coast you'll find surf hostels with board hire; in Chamonix, chalets geared for skiers and hikers. A quick look at the atmosphere rating and recent reviews tells you how social each place really is.
🎒 Is France good for solo travellers?
France is a great, easy country to travel solo. It's safe, superbly connected by train, and the hostel scene means you're never far from other travellers going the same way. A bit of basic French goes a long way, but you'll get by fine in English in hostels and tourist areas.
Between hostel bar nights, walking tours, wine tastings and surf lessons, a dorm of strangers becomes your travel crew fast. For a social stay, look for hostels with high atmosphere ratings and recent reviews from other solo travellers. Those 162 reviews in La Rochelle are the honest word-of-mouth that tells you which places genuinely make it easy to meet people.
✅ How to choose a hostel in France
Start with the city and neighbourhood, then compare price, review score, atmosphere and how close you are to the train station. A few pointers:
Dorms are the cheapest option and usually the most social — and a real money-saver in Paris and on the Riviera.
Private rooms cost more but keep the shared kitchens, bars and common areas.
Location near a station matters in a country where you'll hop between cities by train.
Read recent reviews, not just the score — they're the fastest way to spot what a place is really like right now.
🌍 Backpacker routes through France
France's rail network makes it a joy to plan around, and it links up with half of Europe:
The classic north–south — Paris → Lyon → Marseille → Nice, city to coast by train.
The Atlantic run — Bordeaux → Biarritz for wine, beaches and surf.
The Alps — Chamonix for skiing in winter or hiking in summer.
Cross-border — south-west into Spain (San Sebastián), east into Italy (the Riviera to Cinque Terre) or Switzerland.
A week covers a couple of regions; two weeks lets you go coast to mountains. Line up your first nights here, then book each stop along the route as your plans firm up.
📅 When to book hostels in France
Summer (June to September) is peak, and beds in Paris and along the Riviera fill fast — especially in August and around events like Bastille Day and the Cannes and Tour de France crowds. Paris stays busy year-round, while Chamonix has two seasons: winter for skiing, summer for hiking. Whenever you're travelling, book early in 2026 for a better choice of location, dorm type and private rooms.
