The Flying Fox Backpackers is located in a lovely old building, 400 metres from town. Established to cater for independent travellers, the hostel has a social atmosphere and relaxed environment, it’s the perfect place to make new friends by the log fire with a cup of Italian roasted coffee and a Tim Tam.

We are a short 5 min walk from Katoomba Station and close to the start of the spectacular Blue Mountains World Heritage Listed walks.

We are passionate about this beautiful part of the world and look forward to sharing with you our knowledge on the many walking tracks and climbing routes in the area. At the Flying Fox guests are encouraged to minimise their impact on the environment, to tread lightly on this beautiful part of the world and to enjoy.

At the Flying Fox you will enjoy a relaxed mountain atmosphere. Sit by the fire in our lounge room at night and make new friends while enjoying a cup of free Gluhwein or Mulled Wine and some free Tim Tams to dunk in your Tea. We often have free home cooked pasta nights with home made or Italian breads.

Appreciate the original artwork and soak up the atmosphere. Free DVDs, free WiFi, free book exchange and musical instruments, including didgeridoos, are available for you to try your hand with. We also have a camp fire each night for a couple of hours outside in our courtyard/ hut area.

Included in your price is a great free breakfast including Italian bread, honey jam, and a choice of cereal. Tea coffee and milk are provided all day, and we provide espresso coffee makers and free ground coffee!
If you don't feel like cooking while in the mountains you can try some of the best coffee in the world in Katoomba. Katoomba is coffee crazy! Pop down to one of the many great cafes and chat with the locals.

Bush Walks:
If you would like assistance with hiking trails please ask. We provide free maps for our guests on the areas around Katoomba, Leura, Wentworth Falls and Blackheath. We walk the trails ourselves we are happy to share our knowledge with you.

Mountain Biking:
The owner is a keen mountain biker who loves to help out anyone intending to take on the mountain trails.

Galleries:
Experience amazing local galleries in the Blue Mountains. Many are within easy walking distance from the Flying Fox.

This hostel is amazing, the has a bit of a hippie vibe but that is exactly the people they want to attract. Sitting together in the main room around the fireplace and musical instruments, playing music, telling stories, having a laugh and planning the next hike so no phones! Outside there was another fireplace where we relaxed after a hike, having a drink and a laugh. You don’t book this hostel for a luxurious experience but for a real one with a nice staff and a nice owner!

About Blue Mountains

Peacefully hidden within a rugged region just west of Sydney you’ll find the tranquil and refreshing World Heritage site, Blue Mountains. Fun fact alert: The Blue Mountains got its name from the blue haze that is created by the extensive eucalypt forests. You’ll feel like you’re in a different country compared to the relatively flat terrain of the land down under. Relax and unwind amongst the steep cliffs, forest and waterfalls that encompass the area.

Staying in a Blue Mountains hostel puts you right in the heart of the national park and means you are only a short hop away from the many trails. Choose a hostel just minutes from Echo Point for epic views of the iconic Three Sisters. Or opt for a Blue Mountain hostel with a spa and sauna to really relax after a busy day of hiking. Blue Mountain hostels often have a cosy log fire too - a perfect place to chill out over a cup of tea and a tim tam with other travellers.

Katoomba is the main hub of activity in the Blue Mountains and the starting point for most travellers offering easy access to the famous Three Sisters and Scenic World as well as endless outdoor activities. Wentworth Falls has a more off-the beaten path vibe with quieter hiking trails, whilst quaint village Leura is the place to head for boutique shops and great nightlife.

The Blue Mountains has a lot to offer both adventure seekers and chilled-out travellers. Take your time exploring the trails or for a less strenuous day the botanic gardens in Mount Tomah are a great way to get your fresh-air fix. For adrenaline junkies, head to Scenic World where you can ride the world’s steepest incline passenger railway through ancient rainforests or take a cable car between the cliff tops. There are many magnificent caves with subterranean rivers in this World Heritage area, and there's plenty of opportunity to spot wildlife - keep an eye out for platypus!

Transport around the Blue Mountains area is made easy with the Great Western Highway and railway running parallel across the region. Jump on one of two ‘hop on hop off’ busses, grab a cab, tag onto public buses or catch a shuttle bus that runs between the Katoomba Railway Station, the Three Sisters and Scenic World. The best way to get the Blue Mountains is by train from the Central Train Station in Sydney which has a direct link with the airport. The journey to Katoomba takes around 2 hours.
