Sweeping along Cyprus's sunny south coast, Limassol has a mix of Mediterranean beach life, good food and ancient culture. It's also at the centre of the island's wine-making region, and there are plenty of vineyards nearby to explore. In the city's characterful historic centre, you'll find streets full of honey-coloured stone buildings, with lively tavernas serving meze, shaded by tumbling greenery. Discover Limassol's contemporary art scene at the seafront Prokymea (Molos) Sculpture Park, or explore the island's wild side on the slopes of the nearby Troodos Mountains.

Limassol hostels tend to have a youthful vibe. Choose from modern accommodation decorated with colourful street art, airy lodgings with plants and a garden, or a more upmarket option with a swimming pool. You'll find social spaces like a roof terrace, shared kitchen or lounge where you can meet other travellers. Most hostels in Limassol are within walking distance of a beach, and some organise activities such as barbecue nights and walking tours.

In Limassol's historic Old Town, you'll find a main square buzzing with bars and restaurants, and side streets with cafés and shops selling local handicrafts. The picturesque Old Port is a perfect spot for a stroll: head along the seafront for Molos promenade, a long area lined with tall palms and sprinkled with sculptures. Limassol's central beach is Akti Olympion, where you'll find golden sand, sun loungers and showers where you can hose off after a swim in the sea.

Discover the city's past by exploring sturdy, medieval Limassol Castle or the ancient artefacts of Limassol Archaeological Museum. Vintage car enthusiasts can visit Cyprus Motor Museum, which houses an eclectic collection of vehicles, while art lovers can see one of the island's best collections of contemporary art at the Lanitis Art Foundation. If you're more of an outdoorsy type, head to the Troodos National Forest Park, which is scattered with hiking trails and mountain villages, plus winter ski slopes at Troodos Peak. Limassol's beaches are ideal for yachting, snorkelling, surfing and swimming.

Limassol is roughly halfway in between Paphos and Larnaca International Airports. To get to the town from either of the airports, you can take a taxi (around 40 minutes' drive) or catch the Limassol Airport Express bus (around 50 minutes). The city is small enough to explore on foot, and you can get around easily on the island's bus network – or hire a bicycle for a scenic tour of the Cypriot countryside.
