About Corfu

Corfu has the perfect combination of rugged mountains, Blue Flag beaches and vibrant nightlife. There's plenty for culture lovers too, with a history stretching all the way back to the days of Greek mythology. Whether you're into lazy days lounging on soft sandy beaches, long hikes in olive-studded countryside or strolling around historic old towns, you'll find plenty to keep you occupied during a trip to this Greek island.

Corfu hostels include self-catering apartments, a brightly painted palace and resorts set among tranquil olive groves. Free Wi-Fi is standard in most hostels in Corfu, and some places offer free breakfast so you can tuck into local delicacies like Greek yoghurt and fresh fruit. Swimming pools are also a common feature in a Corfu hostel, ideal for a dip after a day's trekking. Some hostels have on-site bars, so you don't have to head to the lively resort of Kavos for a refreshing beer.

The UNESCO-listed Corfu Town is lively all year round. Its atmospheric narrow streets wind between the Old Fort and port, lined with pastel-coloured Venetian buildings. If you're planning to party, go to Kavos – this is the main spot for the 18-30 crowd, with plenty of nightclubs and karaoke bars. Or, for a more relaxed vibe, Sidari in the north of the island is known for its inviting sandy beaches and laid-back cocktail bars.

Taking a swim in Sidari's Canal D'Amour (canal of love) – created naturally by clear seawater and sandstone formations – is a great way to cool off. According to legend, if you swim the entire length, you'll find the love of your life. The Old Fortress of Corfu is the place to go to learn about the island's history and to watch live music during the summer. Hiking to the top of Mount Pantokrator will give you views across the whole island, and you can even see Albania on a clear day.

If you're coming by plane, you'll land at Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport – 10 minutes by car from Corfu town. You can grab a taxi from outside the terminal or take a public bus. Line number 15 runs between the airport and San Rocco Square in the centre of Corfu Town. It also passes through the InterCity Bus Station, where you can pick up public transport to other parts of the island.
