Worst hostel I've ever stayed at. Tried taking a shower and the water didn't even come out of the spout, it gushed out of the gap between the wall and the shower fixture. Also, I was told the reception would be open 24 hours, and I needed to check out early in order to catch the bus to the airport. At 5:30am I went down and no one was there. I walked all over trying to find someone and I waited for 20 minutes before leaving - my I.D. is still there since they keep it until check out. Ridiculous.

In the middle of lots of good comments it's never easy to read something not so good: but feedback is important to us. I'm sorry you couldn't find a member of staff on check out: staff is here 24 hours but occasionally has to leave reception briefly to deal with something. I'll investigate and get back to you when I have more information. Thank you for making us aware that one of the 3 showers in your room wasn't working: the problem has now been fixed. I hope you had a good trip overall. David

Really nice hostel! I only stayed there for one night, so i didn't had the chance to go to the coffee inside. They have a big variety of breakfast (what is not included, but really cheap and you also can pay in €,£,$) in addition to that, they also have vegetarian "sausages" or "bacon"....all in all a really good hostel, the only bad thing is that there aren't enough opportunities to charge your phone in the rooms and there's no wifi in the rooms as well.

Thank you for the 100%: I am pleased that the negatives you mention didn't lose us any points: things for us to keep in mind as we continue to develop, but not issues that made yours less than a perfect stay. That's excellent. The hostel dates back 20 years or so to days when not so many devices required charging overnight: it is not currently possible or practical for us to provide a socket or 2 for every bed space. I hope you continue to make use of HI hostels in the future. Thanks again David

Hi we did not have a great experience staying here. My son & I stayed in a private room on the 3rd floor, the corridor smelled of urine. The room itself did not smell fresh or clean. The sheets didn't appear washed. My son who is 8 is allergic to cats, woke up the next morning with his eyes flared up?! I am not one to complain but I would not stay here again. The ground floor was fine & the guy at reception friendly.

Thank you for your making time to write a review. I am sorry that we did not live up to your expectations on this visit, and would hope that you would return to give us another chance. Our rooms are cleaned after every check out, and all the linen in the rooms changed. Our sheets and pillow cases are professionally laundered. I will make sure that our team of hard-working housekeepers are aware of your concerns. Please contact me if you would like to discuss the issue further. Thank you. David

Cozy, spartan rooms, linens provided but not towels. Great breakfast restaurant on site. University neighborhood, plenty of restaurants nearby, easy walk to city center. Efficient, hard-working staff. Pretty much exactly what you would expect from a large hostel in a big city. Totally functional, not at all luxurious, prices rather high for the hostel experience, but still a huge cost savings compared to hotels in the area.

Thank you for your hostel review: you have summarised it well - good location, hard-working staff, and cosy! Our en-suite twins and doubles are comfortable and good value: we don't aim to provide a luxury hotel experience though as that is not our business: rooms are definitely hostel style. We have some towels available at reception which we lend out at no charge when requested: we have a limited supply so it's not something we can promise for everyone checking in. Enjoy your travels. I did not feel welcomed staying at the hostel. The living room spaces were tiny. Therefore it was hard to mix/mingle with the other hostelers.

Owner Comment (Hide)
I am sorry to hear that you did not feel 'welcomed' during your stay: the hostel is busy at the moment, with lots of people around, and other guests have mentioned in reviews meeting new people while here. As our free wifi is only available in our public areas we find that people tend to congregate there too. We are lucky that, as well as having a spacious lobby area with sofas and a big dining room on the ground floor, we also have a TV room, library and gallery lounge on our first floor. David

Exactly what it says on the tin - a place to sleep and shower. Not much else, but that was expected. Good security, helpful staff, and kept clean. Better wifi would be appreciated, especially for people who need it to contact family. Even in the lobby the wifi was spotty at best. Location's not the best. It was a bit of a walk to get the the city centre, restaurants, museums, etc... and the area was pretty sketchy feeling. Hostel itself felt safe, area not so much. Expensive, but it's a city.

Thank you for your mostly positive comments after your stay in Belfast. Generally we rate quite highly for value for money, and I think that this is particularly true when we are compared to hostels in other city centres: we are well-located, just a 5 to 10 minute walk from Queen's University, Botanic Gardens and Ulster Museum; just around the corner from lots of cafes and restaurants on Botanic Avenue; and 15 minutes on foot to City Hall. I hope our improved wifi will be running soon. David

Good hostel, would recommend. Was pretty quiet while I was there but the main area but large enough to still meet a good amount of people to go out with. Only problems were no wifi in the rooms or eating area and the kitchen tools were a bit grubby.

Owner Comment (Hide)
Thank you: knowing that a guest would recommend us is excellent: and I hope you do! I recently started doing guest surveys and 100% of responses to the 'would you recommend us?' question say YES! It's good to read that you met some new people while you were here too: so it seems that getting people out of their rooms to use our free wifi might actually be a good thing after all. I've noted your comments about the kitchen utensils and will pass them on to our housekeepers. Keep hostelling! David

one of the staff was super helpful when we asked what there was to do in the town. showers were nice and big. a solid hostel.

Owner Comment (Hide)
Solid! Thank you: I like that! I am pleased you enjoyed your stay, and that staff were able to point you in the right direction so as to make the most of your short visit to Belfast. Enjoy the rest of your holiday - and keep hostelling! David

Stinky, dirty and the wifi worked in one spot on the main floor- not even in the cafe, making it difficult to find a place to sit down, even for 10 minutes to plan things.

Owner Comment (Hide)
It's never good to read negative comments in a review: it's always a concern when our guests have not had a good time: can you let me know if you raised your concerns with staff while you were here as it's always the quickest and easiest way to make things better? We are currently working on improving our free wifi access: it currently works a little better on some devices than others: our IT guys assure us that we will notice the difference when it's all up and running. Enjoy your trip. David

The receptionst whom my friend and myself met on arrival and departure was fantastic, he was so helpful, chatty, and I feel made our trip the little bit easier with ideas of where to go and what to do! If every receptionist was like him then there would be many happier hostel/hotel customers. The room was spacious (we stayed in a twin bed room) and clean.

Thank you for your great comments. It's good to know what we could be the benchmark for good customer service! Our staff always read our online reviews, so I know you will have just made someone's day. Thank you - and we hope to see you again in Belfast. David

The beds were a little bit uncomfortable and I didn't appreciate that the hostel required us to leave our ID (Passport) at the front desk while we stayed there. The showers weren't very good in the shared room. The staff were friendly enough and the location is okay (you can walk to the main attractions with no fuss).

Owner Comment (Hide)
Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. Even though your scores for security, location, staff and cleanliness are all between 80% and 100% your overall experience seems to have been just 'okay', which is disappointing to read. I am also a little confused about your comment about the showers 'in the shared room', as your twin room had private shower/toilet. But if you come back I hope the overall experience will be more positive for you. Safe travels. David

All good. Good location, nice staff, good value for money. Only bad thing is wifi is only available on ground floor.

Owner Comment (Hide)
Thank you for your kind comments after your recent visit to the Youth Hostel in Belfast: our staff works hard to make everyone feel welcome, and it's good to know that you appreciated the good value accommodation we provide. We like to think that only having wifi available on the ground floor brings people out of their rooms into the common areas, but we are always grateful for feedback. I hope you will recommend us if you have friends or family heading this way. Take care. David

All around it was a good hostel to chill at. It helps that it has a sort of diner next door. The location is fantastic as it's only a short walk from the bus/train station. Their is a tour bus literally across the street that can take you to the giant's causeway if you're into that. Security wise, some of the cages under the bed are broken and it's a little awkward using your own lock, so either report the broken/missing cage or just make sure to claim a good one and leave your lock on it.

Thank you for your positive comments. We like to think that we provide a relaxing place to stay, so knowing that you found the hostel a good place to chill is perfect! Our central location, and having the cafe and the tour office on site, makes life easy for our guests. I am sorry you had a problem with the lockers in your room: we are currently looking at replacing some of them: and we also have secure luggage storage at reception as required. Enjoy the rest of your holiday. David

The hostel was clean and tidy and not too far from the town centre. The staff were polite and knowledgeable. The small cafe on site was cheap and offered plenty.

My room was very small and rather dirty as well. there were a lot of gross stand on the wall at my bed . there is also a street light that shines directly into the window of the room I was in. the breakfast available at the causeway cafe is very good but is not included.

Owner Comment (Hide)
Thank you for your review. I am happy to read that you enjoyed your breakfasts at Causeway Cafe, and sorry to read that you were not happy with your room: most of our dorms are of a similar size, and yours was one of our bigger 4s. Sorry also if our housekeepers missed something in the room before your check in: I have had a look and the paintwork looks fresh today. The room has a blackout blind, and we haven't had any complaints about street light: I will check its effectiveness later. David

Better access to the top bunks would help. But then I am 70!

Thank you for your high score after your recent stay: we are very happy with 86%! We don't allocate beds in our dorms, so can't promise a top or a bottom bed I am afraid, and when we are busy we have almost no flexibility in this (but do or best if a guest can't manage the ladders). I am happy to read that you are still hostelling at 70, and hope we will see you again in Belfast. Happy hostelling! David

Staff were excellent, very helpful. As for the hostel I only saw three hours of I as I ended up mass debating with some Canadians into the early hours. They call me the phantom. Last in, first up that's the way I like to

Thank you for leaving a review after your recent stay. It's always good to read positive comments about our staff: they work very hard so they will appreciate your feedback. We have a lot of Canadian guests at the moment, and it sounds as if you kept them entertained! Last in, first up seems like a good philosophy: meaning you make the most of your time when you're travelling. Enjoy the rest of it, and see you again, David

Handy and affordable, although a noisy location on a saturday night (even with our room facing the other side of the building).

Owner Comment (Hide)
Good location. Good value. Thank you for that. I realise from reading recent reviews that there were some problems with noise outside the hostel over the last 2 weekends. We are hoping that this was something out of the ordinary, but will monitor this as time goes on and act where we can to lessen the impact of noise of our guests. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss your experience further. Thank you again for your comments. David
