This hostel was fine for a couple of nights but it needs work doing to improve the experience for guests. We didn't get a wonderful first impression since we were charged an unexpected credit card transaction fee (come on its the 21st century!! Who doesn't pay by card???). Our room was very cold at night, and on a slant too which was rather strange. The bathroom facilities to guest ratio isn't brilliant either. But, it did have plenty of character and was ok for a night or two.

Great hostel located in upmarket Parnell. A quick bus ride and your in the heart of the city. This hostel offers excellent customer service, a great location with good atmosphere. If you're not looking for a party vibe hostel then this perfect house is just the ticket. The facilities are a tad old and good do with updating, but other that it was a good alternative to the tat that is offered in the city centre.

Great location, easy to find, lots of social areas and very homely. Some areas a bit dated but I thought this added to the charm. Showers in demand in the morning as a lot of people get up and about early but thats to be expected. Only down side really was booking three nights and having to move after first night - after 30 hours of travel I was looking forward to a long lie! But the second room was bigger and great view over CBD. Great value for money and I would recommend.

I had a wonderful 3 nights at City Garden Lodge in Auckland - the whole atmosphere is friendly and quiet. I loved the layout of the kitchen with centre table and all the stoves. I also loved the lounge room - so comfortable, and no TV! At 76 I was the oldest person staying there, but the younger backpackers, and all ages, accepted me as one of them. It's near the bus route and close to the city, quiet and very well run. They even have a yoga room, for quiet times. I can't wait to go back. ......

Lovely hostel and really helpful staff, only downside is that free internet can't be used in rooms (signal not strong enough).

They have very odd office hours with the office closing from 1-4 PM and after 8 PM, which can be rather inconvenient.

I liked this hostel lots, the owners were very nice and could talk to you on a personal level, not like other places ive stayed at. It felt like more of a chilled out hostel too which is nice as i try to avoid the party hostels. The location is a little bit away from the centre but this doesnt really matter as you can catch the bus (about every ten minutes for $1.80) from the top of the road into town. It is right next to parnell road though, which has an array of nice cafes and restaurants

There's no locker to lock your stuff in the dorm. Pretty avg hostel in general although i do like its location in parnell. Hint: do request for the voucher code for the free wifi during your checkin cus they don't tell you anything about it until you ask for it.

Had a nice time at City Garden Lodge. A well run, charming facility in a nice location for those seeking something away but none too far from the city center.

Charming place, loved the garden. The bunk beds were a bit uncomfortable, and there were no lockers, otherways a good hostel.
