the staffs are very helpful there. the place is nice, old building, kinda spooky actually :) i was there for like 8hours only after a long trip from samui thailand and need to catch the early flight. so i was a bit upset that i cannot use the wifi to do mobile checking. but i was really grateful the the guy in night shift that managed to wake me up in the morning. i havent set my alarm to malaysia time so i could have missed my flight. i'm really thankful to him.

Breakfast is really good, best in Asia so far. Helpful staff with local knowledge although would have liked to Check-in on time. Very clean which is a bonus from what i have experienced so far.

It is a pretty old hostel. The pictures they've posted would not match up in reality (however again we r just staying in a double bedroom, couldn't possibly judge for every rooms). The toilets are good and I love the shower! However it smells weird sometimes! The staffs are helpful to the extent of your services but don't expect much more than that. Overall it is a pretty good place to be in but I think you might be able to find a newer and better places with the same price.

Perfect location. Beautiful, old, Chinese house. Very basic but great value. Dinah was one of the kindest people we met during our travels in Malysia. Thank you!

Charming and sweet, great value for the money. Awesome atmosphere - classic pre-war building. Very clean, and great free breakfast. Much classier than your typical backpackers hostel.

No real lobby or office. Desk in the middle... Very noisy location, with noise from downstairs & the street. Bus to guesthouse is good but the stops are not marked & we did not know where to get off & has to walk 30 minutes. Staff is friendly & helpful

Absolutely great guesthouse... The building itself is something worth seeing, as it is an old wooden house full of character. The staff is very kind of accomodating, and the rooms are spacious. The lounge/dining area is very clean and spacious and comfy, and I like how the ceiling is very high and lets in natural light. Great hostel, would definitely come back!

The Old Penang Guesthouse is a very nice and nostalgic-style hostel with very kind people working inside who are ready to offer you help all the time! They provide free breakfast (Toast and fruit, coffee and tea), and internet service. The place is very lovely, I personally love the small balcony in the second floor, it feels so great to see the blue sky and hear the singing of the birds every morning when you brush your teeth there ^o^

Just an average hostel, not sure why it's top rated but can't say we compared it to many other hostels in Penang. It is in a good location near a bus stop to most parts of the island. One of us did however get bitten by something maybe bedbugs in the female dorm!?

Helpful staff, who seem to enjoy their job and relating to visitors. Relatively quiet and calm, but lots of opportunity to engage with other guests if you want to and close to (some of) the Penang action. Very much a heritage guesthouse and very basic but comfortable enough.

Excelent location. Shared bathrooms but very very clean. Great to be able to bring your own food. Good to be able to have breakfast whenever. (from 7am to 12.)

good location as in the love lane, and convenient to everywhere in geroger town. But the room with no window and easily listen to the next door when early morning. and even waken up one morning by the noise from next door...

Very attractive building, big room (single, with twin bed) with aircon, clean shared bathroom. Wifi was a bit spotty but it was free. Great location, lots of other travelers, friendly staff, and free breakfast (toast and coffee).

The dorm room for females is cramp. You can barely fit all 4 backpacks in there. The staff is helpful and great. Wifi signal is weak.

We loved the atmosphere of this guesthouse. Of our tour of SE Asia, Old Penang Guesthouse was by far one of our all-times favorite hostels/guesthouses. The staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean, the place is in a great location, and the guesthouse has a cool "vibe" to it.

I am a travel writer and stay in a lot of hostels & guesthouses all over the world so when I rate places it is not like I am a first time tourist and this place was not a bad place. It has only three single rooms, of which room #15 is a tiny box, room #2 not bad in size for one person and is very workable. Bed was comfortable, place seemed alright but I was only there for one night on transit to other country. I can say that this is very popular guesthouse which is well located.
