SJI is a very laid back and easy going Hostel experience. It is is situated in a residential neighborhood and from the look of it does not stand out as a hostel. It is very near to a wonderful modern art museum and the walk to the beach is laid with incredible street art (graffiti art). There is not a central thriving marketplace that I found near by though you are near a main drag that would resemble the tail end of a city center in a less economically thriving neighborhood. Walgreens near by.

I had a wonderful stay at the hostel. The staff is very friendly, and it was great to meet so many people from all around the world. I was directed to all the right places to visit, including the good places to eat at locally. The only (minor) thing was there was no power outlet in our room, which meant I needed to charge my phone and laptop outside in the common area. But overall, I had a wonderful experience, and would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a hostel to stay at.

Not what I expected and by that I mean not as good as the reviews stated. I would consider finding a cheap hotel over this place , but there were some fun people there. Even though this website said they take credit cards they DO NOT TAKE CREDIT , so I had to pay cash. Also the owner seems not very present and staff is not around 24 hours, nor are they very aware of the surroundings or give good directions. If you want to see real San Juan stay here,. but only if the other hostels are full.

DO NOT STAY AT THIS PLACE!!! Apologies for the long review but you must know what happened to me and hopefully it won't happen to you too: The owner, Francisco, is crazy and AGGRESSIVE. He broke into the bathroom while I was taking a shower and threatened to take me out of there. I had been in the shower for less than 5 minutes. Staff later told me this was common for him to act crazy. I've been to over 100 hostels around the world and this was by far THE WORST EXPERIENCE I EVER HAD!

We were there two nights, but hardly saw the staff. The location is inconvenient, but the bus system is easy. The only cool thing in walking distance was the Placita de Santurce - go there if you get the chance! Roosters, dogs, & frogs made noise ALL night, so sleep was nearly impossible. But the air conditioner worked well. The room was stuffy, but fairly clean. They need more bathrooms, it was hard to get a shower in the morning. The common space was nice and the vibe was chill.

The staff was extremely nice. The mattresses were not very good; they scoop down in the center.

I wish there were more bathrooms. By comparison to other hostels I have stayed in in San Juan, this was much better. Friendly, but not overly annoyingly friendly like at the palace hostel. The location is also much safe and closer in proximity to things.

The owner was incredibly kind and helpful. The location was not terribly convenient but Old San Juan was easily accessible via bus from the hostel.

It was an enjoyable first try at the hostel experience. My particular room did not have AC, and in the summer it would be a neccessity. The balcony was nice touch. I connected with the staff from the onset on a personal level. I would return.

Francisco was excellent host, neighbors were great and my school age son was comfortable and safe. It's gritty, but my son understood that not all hotels are fancy and not every vacation country is wealthy, an important lesson in my book

The hostel is very nice, it has a lot of character, unfortunately it has really really small rooms, so you have hardly enough space to pack your things before you leave. Another problem was that, at least during our stay, we never saw any staff member, so we weren´t able to pay the rest of the room and had to leave. we payed it by credit card after we left. but it wasnt a good feeling though leaving without paying
