The hostel is very nice, it has a lot of character, unfortunately it has really really small rooms, so you have hardly enough space to pack your things before you leave. Another problem was that, at least during our stay, we never saw any staff member, so we weren´t able to pay the rest of the room and had to leave. we payed it by credit card after we left. but it wasnt a good feeling though leaving without paying

A group of 5 of us were getting into San Juan very late from our NYC flights and really didn't need anything fancy--we just needed to crash for about 7 hours and SJ Hostel fit the bill. The staff were extremely conscientious and checked in with us before arriving to discuss any special arrangements--which we had. We weren't slated to get into the place until about 1:00 am. The staff had placed a key under the mat with our name, making self-check in flawless. Thanks!

When I first arrived I was a little concerned about the area. It didn't take long upon settling in to notice that the hostel is surrounded by lots of families & kind faces. There is a neighborhood watch that enforces respect and control of illicit activities which added to my comfort. The atmosphere is that of a very friendly frat house. Except clean. Tristian & Scott, I believe, were the staff & were awesome. They clearly care about the place & I hope they're still around when I go back.

Staff were super helpful and friendly. Very laid-back vibe in a really cool house. Main bathroom could've been cleaner (mildewed shower curtain, urine smell around toilet), but I didn't sweat it too much. Bedroom and common areas were clean.

Bathrooms could use a bit more upkeep, not just from the staff but from the guests too. I just had some problems with others sharing the space keeping and it clean. Boys will be boys.

Staff is helpful if mistakes are made on reservations, and for directions about somewhere you might visit during your vacation, or additional ideas of something to do during your vacation. The pancakes get really old quick, but keep up the coffee.

The only problem with SJI is the animal noise in the mornings. The rooster starts cawing around 5am and stops around 11am. On the other side of the hostel, a dog constantly barks from 8am-11am. BRING EARPLUGS. Also, there is a tour guide named Nate who is extremely affordable, personable, and fun. I would definitely recommend asking Francisco for Nate's number in case a guide is needed. He is extremely knowledgeable and familiar with El Yunque and the caves.

The facility itself is decent, but the roosters that live next door make sleeping past 4 am absolutely impossible. The hostel is quiet, but between the frogs that start chirping at sunset and the most annoying creatures known to mankind, actually getting rest becomes a dream itself. The employees are very kind and helpful and the bus stop is a short walk away. It was nice to stay in a place that's away from the main drag.

I enjoyed my stay at this hostel. I thought it had a good vibe - I met friendly travelers here, the facilities were good, i was in a room with fans and air conditioning (although i don't think all of them have this), and most of all - the staff was great. SUPER friendly and helpful. Francisco goes out of his way to help travelers feel comfortable, and I really appreciated that!

We really enjoyed spending the night at SJIH. The people we met will make our night there one of our favorite vacation memories. The staff is very helpful and friendly, especially with helping us getting around the neighborhood. The location was perfect, tucked inside of a neighborhood and within walking distance of the bus stop.

The character was fantastic - and it was so easy to meet people at this hostel. Both nights we stayed we hung out with people on the fantastic porch, and went out with people we met at the nearby local bars. There is also a nearby local market that was adorable and an amazing food vender down the street. Parking was not provided, however street parking was easy to find. Beach is a moderate walking distance but worth the walk. The chicken and dog nearby made it hard to sleep in though.

Puerto Rico doesn't have much of a hostel culture, but the people at San Juan International know exactly what they're doing. There's a great vibe here. It's located in a great area in San Juan walking distance from Plaza del Mercado where you can go for drinks and food in the evenings. It's 5-10 minute bus ride to Old San Juan (75 cents each way) so you get to see both the touristy and non touristy part of San Juan. My only regret is not staying here for more time!

Francisco, Luke and the other staff were very accommodating and very helpful. The hostel was well run and included all of the necessary facilities. Good place to stay in Puerto Rico, not too far from Old San Juan yet far enough from the tourists. Recommend.
