Best thing about this hostel is the friendly staff. This hostel has a bunch of weird old homeless looking people who stare blankly for a long time (maybe they were high). Breakfast was stingy, only one thin slice of ham? REALLY?! This hostel is too big hence very systematic. Had to check out at 10am and was refused entry to hang out at the common area for 1 or 2 hours to wait for my flight. I'd rather pay less at other hostels and have a nice breakfast outside.

It was ok, but it doesn't have a kitchen, and there's no key in the rooms so anyone staying at the hostel can go into your room :S I left my towel drying in the bedroom and it dissapear! -.- It's right in the red light district so, if you wanna go there, that's a plus...

We had a great stay at Shelter City! The place is right in the heart of the red light district, so all the fun of Amsterdam is literally right outside the door, but it is also extremely secure. The hostel has a nice cafe and courtyard ajoining it, free wifi, and superb free breakfast. The staff are great, too, and took the extra time to learn our names and help us with SO SO much. Hate having to put my stuff in lockers, but they were conveniently located and added some extra peace of mind!

The hostel is centrally located. 10 minutes walk from the central station and right next door to the red light district. Breakfast is quite nice. Staff are super. The is a strong sense of community with various group activities, including a walking tour. From the perspective of facilities, the hostel is really basic though. I stayed in room No.5 and my bed was literally in the hallway. Everybody in the inner part needed to pass by my bed. It felt very strange. The bathroom is not clean.

I thought the hostel layout was great, the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, and the hostel's no-drugs/alcohol policy ensures the place is clean. The beds were comfortable and lights were sufficient. Inconveniences were that the shower spray was weak, hence it took a longer time to shower. The hostel dorms also lacked electrical outlets, hence everyone were competing for the sockets and many a time a single power outlet was overloaded. Other than that, a huge thanks to the staff!

nice place. For me personally, the most important thing is the cheap price considering that i'll just sleep late night and wake up very early. But apparently this shelter give me more than that. The location is in the center heart of Amsterdam so you can just walk outside the shelter and you already in the middle of touristic place. In addition, the security is quite good as well.

A decent hostel, good location, clean, breakfast is offered, but the organization around that service could be improved. You could get toast or bread with cheese&ham, not both.

The first thing that happened was that my towel, that was on my bed, got stolen.

Whilst I appreciate the Christian ethos of this hostel, I think the staff may also want to focus on the customer service aspect of running a hostel. On check in I was told that I was not allowed to use drugs, that there were prayer meetings at certain times, and if I hadn't guessed already - they were a christian hostel. I was not however told where the shower rooms were, how breakfast worked, or what time it was at - these I had to figure out on my own, or that you had to pay to use a towel!

I really hate giving bad reviews because my expectations are low but I was thoroughly unimpressed with this hostel. The rooms are ridiculously tiny and the beds are so close I could have held hands with the girl in the bottom bunk next to me. Seemed more like an army barracks or bomb shelter than a hostel. Every time I went to the bathroom it was a mess. I think there were maybe 2 outlets in a room for 16 and a few more in the common area. Staff are certainly nice though.

Good location (misleading instruction though), good breakfast, facilities are poor considering its price. Yet still a good choice in this period in Amsterdam.

The only thing about the security is: The lockers they use are not really safe. I reckon you could open them with a small screwdriver. Anyways I haven't heard of anything being stolen.
