A total five-star experience for staying in a quiet and cozy Ryokan in the backstreet near Gion. Very friendly and helpful staff who helped me learned about the getting-around secrets of Kyoto's train and bus system. I also enjoyed the reserved hot-bath and self-reliant cooking in the kitchen. They have every information you need at the front desk, you can taste the best of Japanese ancient culture here.

Stayed here because nothing else was available in Kyoto (national holiday weekend). It's not actively bad, it's just not very good, especially when compared to other hostels we stayed in for a similar price. Most annoying aspect is that at 11pm a bloke comes round and turns the lights off and common room is no longer available for use. It's not as bad as some people make out but you can definitely find better places for your money if you book far enough in advance
