The cocktails are very poor but everything else was great apart from the fact that my watch disappeared from my room.

Excellent place. Really nice setting, great courtyards, awesome rooms, could be the best value for money hostel we've come across in the world. Just don't expect the best service. Costs seem quite high for China for all the extra things like laundry, food, booking transport tickets etc. but it is a touristy area. Best bet is to definitely stay here but book transport stuff over the road at Yamen hostel and don't eat anywhere inside the old city walls, just outside you get great food cheap

It was great being picked up. The staff were lovely and helpful. Mostly they can't speak Chinese but there was nearly always one girl on duty who could speak English very well. The hostel is really beautiful and the bar a nice place to sit. The room was fine and I felt safe being able to put my own padlock on the outside of the door when we went out and left our stuff in there. They also dropped us at the station for our evening train even though we checked out eight hours earlier which was kind

The bathroom was very unclean. It would have been helpful if the staff spoke some English.

Wonderful atmospheric building and courtyards. Massive bed. Double room very nice. However it seemed a slightly odd place. Got picked up at the station at 5 in the morning but then taken to hostel where the driver rang someone else and I had to explain we had a reservation (uh you just picked us up from the station?). Staff were most unfriendly we encountered in China. Good place to stay but maybe eat and go out elsewhere.

Really good value for money and in the centre of the old walled town. Only the manager spoke English but he was really helpful.

Lovely rooms that are good value for money with nice bathrooms. Nice place to stay and one of women working there can speak more English than the others.

All in all a very nice charachter and a very good price. Toiletts were just cleaned once a day and pretty messed up in the afternoon. Morning stuff is not 100 % ok in her head, she is hard to understand, often dont know the prices so she is asking you how much you have to pay and so on. but all in all ok

Great room with a lot of character, situated in the center of the ancient city. Walking distance from all the nice sites in Pingyao. In general the staff was nice, but didn't speak good English (except for the owner, who was really nice and speaks excellent English). One member of the staff was particularly unfriendly and even burped when serving us our food. Her English was not understandable. A good point is that the hostel can arrange a direct bus from Pingyao to Xi'an for you.

We had great service at the Zhengjia hostel, Bob the manager helped us book train tickets, gave us free bottles of water during our stay, offered us a free Chinese whiskey, we were given a free Chinese gift each when leaving and driven personally back to the train station. Our room was traditional style and comfortable although bathroom smelled a bit, I think this is standard for older traditional Chinese buildings. I would recommend staying here for the helpful, friendly service.

The 15RMB dorms are a steal with big wooden beams visible, it's in an old courtyard house like most others in Pingyao. The staff were helpful and mostly polite but only one had functional English.

A great hotel, especially for the price. The room was clean and beautifully decorated; the bed wasn't too hard for China either. The staff seemed overworked; they gave the same answer - "Later!" - to many of our questions, but by the end of our 4-day trip, they had completed or answered all of our queries. The courtyard setting of this hotel is magical; you won't regret spending a few days here. The bar/cafe is decent for the price - try the pizzas. Would stay again.

Bob, the hostel manager was fantastic! He helped us with booking a bus to Xi'an, as they don't stop in Pingyao, then escorted us early the next morning to the town's edge where he'd organised a bus to detour to collect us. Because it was winter, he had upgraded all his guests to private rooms as they were much warmer. He showed great concern for his guest's comfort. Staff can be a bit blunt, but that's probably just a language barrier problem. Pingyao is AMAZING!

the hostel and facilities were great. There was some confusion with the pick up service from the train. There really is only one person in particular from the staff that I found impatient and unfriendly but everyone else was great! Clean and well located.

The hostel has lots of character. The room was a little drafty, but the heating system ensured it was warm. The staff are friendly and a little crazy. Towels were not included in the room.

Really good place to stay in Pingyao and great for the price. Room was nice and warm. Lots of atmosphere and friendly helpful staff. Only problem I had was that in my dorm there was mold on the wall though I know this is hard to get rid of in an old building

This hostel is such good value, my room was beautiful, very nicely decked out and so clean. The staff were all helpful and friendly, particularly Bob, the owner. He arranged for a free train station pick-up and drop-off which is so useful. The hostel also ran a trip to the Wang family courtyard which was good - I ended up recommending a couple in another hotel to seek out this trip at the Zhengjia! A really great hostel and a fantastic location in ancient Pingyao.
