San Juan is the capital city of Puerto Rico, as well as the most populous. It sits on Puerto Rico’s northeast coast, along the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1521, it is famous for its rich history and architecture to match. Not only does it have structures built centuries ago, but it’s also lined with white sand beaches, stifling blue water, and enjoys beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
There are several highly rated hostels San Juan to choose from. They’re all only minutes away from picturesque beaches and surrounded by authentic Puerto Rican food, culture, and people. You’ll love the Caribbean vibe that the San Juan Hostels have! Many of the hostels offer free breakfast, activities, and pub crawls; look for a San Juan hostel that offers all three to help get the most out of your experience.
The hostels in San Juan are located in Old San Juan and the Santurce district. Established in 1521, Old San Juan is the ideal place for the history buffs to stay to soak up the colourful streets and historic Puerto Rican charm. Old San Juan is also home to many galleries, museums, and nightlife options. The Santurce district is the most populated district in San Juan with plenty of food, nightlife, and beach access.
Simply roaming the streets of Old San Juan is an experience that you’ll never forget; the San Juan National Historic Site and 16th century Castillo San Felipe del Morro are sights you need to behold. San Juan also has a wide variety of galleries and museums to visit that have in-depth explanations of the culture and history of everywhere from San Juan to the American continent as a whole. If you’re feeling adventurous there is tons of fun for everyone from ziplines and via ferratas to snorkelling and bioluminescent kayaking!
The best way to get around as a tourist on a budget is with the Puerto Rico Metropolitan Bus Authority. There are bus routes to/from the airport, as well as throughout San Juan. There’s also the Tren Urbano that can be used to venture out to San Juan’s surrounding areas. Explore Old San Juan by foot to be fully immersed in the culture and history, and there are free trolleys from Plaza de Armas that will take you around if you get tired. Taxis are expensive but there are plenty if you need one.
