Overview

We've kept the gorgeous stained-glass windows of Belford Hostel – which used to be a church – and added a whole lot more besides. Think free Wi-Fi, a lively bar (for hanging out with new travel mates) and an outdoor barbecue. You'll find Scottish and sporty memorabilia all over the common areas, from a caricature of Braveheart to artwork showing the National Anthem's opening verse. We've also got a TV for watching films and live sport, along with a pool table if you feel up to starting a mini-tournament.

Location

We're in a pretty central location in Edinburgh's West End, close to old Dean Village and the Water of Leith. You can get to the hostel easily from Edinburgh Haymarket station – it's about a 15-minute walk away. If you're heading to us from Edinburgh Airport, jump on express bus 100 to Haymarket Station. It's around a 30-minute journey.

Rooms and Dorms

You'll have a bunk with two plug sockets in your mixed or female-only dorm – useful for charging a couple of things at once. There's also a free locker for keeping your stuff safe (don't forget your padlock). For a small charge, we'll also store your backpack for you on the last day if you're not leaving Edinburgh till late. We've got private rooms, too, some with en-suites. Linen's included whichever space you book.

Extras and activities

Our free city maps are on hand to help you get around and we've got a book exchange for a little light reading in between checking out Edinburgh Castle or strolling up the Royal Mile. Want to save your pennies? There's a kitchen for cooking up some grub (ideal when you're not trying out local delicacies like deep-fried Mars bars!). Making your own tea and coffee using our facilities also helps the budget stretch a bit further. Check in is between 2pm and 3am.

    Superb

I booked one of the private rooms. A small room, but that’s fine by me. Very comfortable bed, very well cleaned, decor nice and tidy. A good set up of shelves, tea making facilities, mirror etc. The shared bathroom facilities are pristine, the shower is spacious and sparkling. The lady on reception was very helpful and personally showed me to the room. Check in was very easy. Overall, brilliant value for money and made my trip to see friends really easy.

I liked the place, the staff, and mostly the bathrooms and the toilets are really clean. Only thing which mattered me was the heater in the room. It hardly worked. If you could look in to it, every other things were really awesome!

    Fabulous

It was really cool staying in an old church, they really did an awesome job building the hostel! The staff was friendly and the TV room is extremely cozy. The hostel is in a quiet area not too far from the city center. The dorm was a bit small but the bed was very comfortable. All in all I would recommend Belford Hostel.

    Fabulous

I would definitely come back. I love the church atmosphere, though the decorations and other guests do minimize that effect. While heating does kick on in the evening in the rooms and the rec room the kitchen and bathrooms are freezing and when the heat is off so are the rooms, but hey, that’s the price of living in a stunning church. The staff couldn’t have been more lovely or helpful. Very secure system of keys and lockers. The fridge was intimidatingly full but the kitchen is well organized.

Lovely staff and building, but in the room the sheets were with stains and the temperature was really low, almost freezing. The shower were very clean and with hot water. Over all it was a good choicefor a group.

    Very Good

    29 Feb 2020
While sleeping in an old church seems like a cool idea, it definitely isn’t when it’s cold outside! Even though we had the heater turned up to max, we were freezing most of the time. Our twin room was quite small but sufficient for a night. The shared bathroom was clean and hardly ever occupied by someone else. I would maybe think about staying here again, by definitely only in the summer!

    Good

The place was okay. Although a bit packed and no ventilation in the rooms, if you are staying just for a night or two then it'd be fine. It's a couple of miles from the city centre. They provide lockers which are great as many hostels don't. Rooms have thin walls, so...

Funny, I never stayed in the Belford Hostel because when I arrived it was closed since March because of covid. I had the info during the day by mail , but when I drive from London to Edinburgh I don't open my mails. it was far to late to inform me I noticed your mail couples of days after. By luck the Britannia hotel on the opposite side of teh road was open and could have a room for me. I am quite angry !!!
