Inside our grand building, you'll find quirky décor, lofty ceilings, plush carpets and distinctive artwork – as Instagrammable as the old fort itself. We've got a spacious kitchen, outdoor sun trap and a big-screen cinema room, too – perfect for bonding with other travellers over a movie or one of our BBQs. Our friendly staff are on hand to chat about everything from our next pool competition to our traditional ceilidh socials. Drop by reception to pick up a free city map.

Location

Our Scottish-owned hostel is up the hill from Grassmarket and a short walk from the bus and train stops. You can get to Edinburgh Airport within 30 minutes by car. We're around the corner (an 8-minute walk) from the vibrant Royal Mile in the Old Town, but in a peaceful street so you're all set up for a quiet night's sleep.

Rooms and Dorms

We've got bright double, triple, quadruple and dorm rooms with lockers to keep your bags secure. You'll have clean fitted sheets and bed linen, plus a handy bedside locker and reading lamp for late-night chats with friends back home. Our unisex bathrooms have hot power showers and hairdryers. Wi-Fi, tea and coffee are free, so you can sit in bed with a cuppa while browsing the news.

Extras and activities

We've got loads of comfy lounges full of sofas for you to sprawl out on, including one with a jukebox and grand piano for impromptu jam sessions post-pub crawl. There's a 19th-century fireplace to keep you warm on cold Scottish nights, too, or you can huddle up with a guitar and some records in the cosy Groove Lounge. We reckon you won't leave Scotland without taking part in at least one singalong!

I had a very comfortable stay. I had the room to myself because of the Covid-19 restrictions. The staff were helpful and the building felt safe and clean. The building had all the safety protocol in place. The location is great and convenient. I definitely recommend!

We booked our staying at the hostel 2 months before arrival, in the middle of the pandemic, with the hope of a possible future travel. Luckily for us the trip was made possible mostly because of the Castle Rock Hostel that opened their doors even in such an unstable period. We arrived at 1 am and the staff member that welcomed us was friendly and not bothered at all (even if they closed the reception at 11pm). The hostel was super clean and the stuff very helpful, I would love to come back ASAP!

Definitely one of the best hostels I’ve stayed in, although having an entire room to yourself certainly helps. Communal areas are terrific, bedding is comfortable, shower and toilets clean. The only suggestion I could make is the introduction of a curtain in the shower cubicles so your towel/clothes don’t get wet while showering.

Staff super friendly and very good location. Due to COVID-19, they offered me a private room for the price of a shared room! Everything was clean and I felt safe. They have many common areas such as a living room, kitchen, etc. I strongly recommend this hostel!

Great place to stay! This hostel is amazing and they really try their best to avoid covid 19. You have your own room, toilet and bathroom :) At the hostel I've just seen another two guests, we know it is not a good time to make friends. The only thing to improve, in my opinion, it's the check in time (a bit late (5pm) although, as you can leave your stuff for free, this is not a big deal. I would love to come back to castle rock!

Great place to stay. Staff were super lovely. View of the castle was incredible. You can tell that without covid the scene and vibes would be unreal there. Felt safe with good covid measures in place- only one person per dorm, assigned toilet and shower stalls and face masks asked to be worn in the hallways. The room was clean, as was the common area- I literally saw them scrubbing the walls. Thanks for a great stay!

Great hostel. Great staff, great facilities and near to all the major sights. Good value for money and would recommend in the future. A bit quiet but likely due to time of year and COVID
