If you're looking for minimalism and ultra-stylish interior design, Kyoto Morris Hostel is a winner. Cook and hang out in the cool streamlined kitchen. It's next to our café, which morphs into a low-key bar come the evening – ideal for sampling Japan's trendiest craft beers. The stylish lounge space is perfect for meeting other travellers, and free Wi-Fi means it's usually a popular spot with bloggers and Insta pros. For an extra unique touch, the bedrooms in our quirky building are actually underground! Air con keeps them fresh and cool.

From Kyoto Station, get the Karasuma Line to Marutamachi Station, which is a 12-minute walk from the hostel. On the way, you'll have loads of opportunities to snap a few shots of the city's iconic architecture and kitsch corners, too. If you prefer to walk there's tons nearby. The Sentō Imperial Palace, former residence of Japan's Emperors, is a 12-minute stroll. Planning your trip from the airport? Book a transfer – it's about an hour's drive.

Our mixed and female-only dorms are designed to give you privacy (you'll find an individual reading light and curtains around each bunk). There's an en-suite bathroom in every dorm, and we'll give you a fluffy towel and crisp sheets for free. If you're travelling as a couple— or just want to splash out — we have twin, double and quad private rooms, too.

Extras and activities

Take one of our free rental bikes and see the old town from a different perspective. If you haven't planned ahead, have a chat with one our friendly team first and they'll point out the top sights on a city map (they're free to take away!). We've made our laundry facilities free too, leaving you a little extra for your trip to Nishiki Food Market, also known as 'Kyoto's Kitchen'.

Kyoto Morris Hostel is hands down the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at. I’ve traveled Europe for 4 months and Japan for a month and it blows them out of the water. Staff is excellent and will always be willing to have a conversation and also great with kids from what I saw. The location is superb, near the imperial garden, main shopping street, and river. Room and bath was insanely nice and clean. Kitchen and bar were inviting, filled with art, and equally nice. Don’t look anymore, just go here.

Very local hostel close to convenience stores, bakeries, and the imperial Palace. The free bike rental and laundry were a plus. The breakfast buffet was also such a great deal. Highly recommend!

Best hostel ever stayed in. Clean, spacious, modern and super well equipped. Beds comfortable, good pressure showers and awesome common area. Free luggage storage with locks. Buffet breakfast incredible. Staff were amazing particularly Reo, Keita and Sou who went the extra mile to make my stay enjoyable. Couldn't recommend this hostel more highly!

Amazing in every way. Facilities were by far the best of dozens of hostels i've visited over the years. Staff was very nice and helpful and location seemed perfect for visiting the must see places around town. Nightlife was also close by. No reservations for recommending this hostel for everyone. Great rooms and facilities, awesome value for money. Was very chilled out while we were there - not really a party vibe. Short walk to buses and 10-15 mins from closest subway stops

Enjoyed our stay at this hostel. We booked a private room, which was small but adequate for two people on a short stay. The bed was very comfortable. Toilets available on every floor, but the showers are at the basement level only. The lounge area is very modern and comfortable, but there definitely was not a "party vibe" during our stay - you can bring your own drinks in though. Our favorite aspect was borrowing bikes - 1000 yen deposit for a full day of biking.
