Property Description

Built in 1831, Madame Isabelle’s family moved onto the property at the turn of the century, in 1900. Her family expanded and decorated the house before Madame’s father bequeathed it to her. Madame Isabelle and her husband continued to renovate the house until they left the city in 2002.

The house is tastefully ornamented and furnished, staying faithful to the architectural characteristics typical of old New Orleans houses in this area. As we are proud of every single detail that makes this house special, we encourage you to enjoy every part of it as well and to feel at home for the duration of your stay.

Once you venture out the house, a vibrant neighborhood welcomes you. Delicious restaurants and local bars share the streets with Creole cottages and shotgun houses. Though set in a quiet area, thriving nightlife is easily accessible from Madame Isabelle’s House: Frenchmen Street is only five minutes away by foot, Bourbon Street is within ten minutes walking distance, and Canal Street, which connects you to Mid-City and Uptown, fifteen minutes away by foot. If you would like to explore more than the downtown area without heading all the way to Canal Street, there is a bus stop conveniently located at the corner of the street that can transport you to any of the city’s many renowned tourist destinations.

Dormitory rooms as well as private rooms are available. There are two and three person private rooms in the house. Almost all of our private rooms are equipped with a cable TV, a refrigerator, and a private bathroom. All beds are equipped with new, 8-inch mattresses and brand-new linens; however, you may not want to stay in your room long because the hidden courtyard garden awaits you, replete with an outdoor deck and a Jacuzzi hot tub.

The staff is really great, the beds are confortable, the rooms are cozy and there is an everyday evening-event. In the night it's very quiet and you can get some sleep very well. For smokers, there is a cozy smoking room in the backyard and there is also a hot-tub, which is clean and you can use on your own until 10 p.m. You'll get an included breakfast every morning until 11 p.m. There is a 24h-shop right at the corner, where you can get some drinks and even some fastfood. I really recommend it

Everything about this place is perfect! The staff couldn’t be more welcoming and it has a communal vibe where you get to meet people from everywhere. The location is great, very close to the French Quarter, the architecture of the houses around is amazing. Also 5 mins walk to Frenchmen St where you can enjoy the greatest live music in the city. They offer a very good free breakfast and the backyard has a hot tub!!! It’s also very clean and comfortable, you feel at home very quickly!

I really enjoyed my stay here. The facility was clean and had a gorgeous backyard to relax in. When compared to the other hostel in the area, I much preferred this one (I stayed at both). Would definitely book again!

This was my first time staying in a hostel and I am really glad I chose Madame Isabelle’s. The upsides: free simple bfast, fairly close to French Quarter, relaxing and social atmosphere, hot tub, comfy beds, full kitchen access, option to leave belongings locked up with staff. The downsides: small spaces to place things in the 8-person room, creaky bed that can wake you/others up, no water to fill bottle downstairs (only filtered tap upstairs but it was fine), and easily cramped kitchen.

Having a cat in the house that sits and walks on the dining room table was disgusting. Having to go through a dorm with people in their beds to get from our private room to the rest of the hostel was disturbing. Having to use keys to unlock the dorm door every time we returned to our room was frustrating and difficult when carrying items. Sharing a bathroom is one thing but sharing it with a dorm was unexpected. The sink didn’t drain and the water in the shower was either freezing or scalding.
