Overview

Put your comfiest trainers on and join one of our free daily walking tours at Royal Mile Backpackers in Edinburgh. Even in winter – there's usually a crackling open fire in our cosy lounge to warm you up when you return! After all that walking, you can fix yourself a hot dinner in our bright, open plan kitchenette/dining area. We're a friendly bunch – get to know us on our free Thursday pub crawl. We'll also sort you out with discounts on local food and drink places.

Location

Edinburgh's Royal Mile is one of the most central locations in the city. Step outside our door in August – the Edinburgh Festival season – and you'll find all kinds of street performers, from bagpipers to clowns. Holyrood Palace, the Queen's official residence in Scotland, is a 10-minute walk away, while the 11th-century Edinburgh Castle is also a 10-minute stroll. There you'll be able to see the Stone of Destiny, used for the coronation of ancient Scottish kings. To get here from the airport, hop on the 100 bus for about 30 minutes and get off at Waverley Bridge. We're a 7-minute stroll from there.

Rooms and Dorms

We have female-only and mixed dorms here at Royal Mile Backpackers. Heading out to explore the city? Keep your bag in the secure lockers for a small deposit. Sink down into the free sheets (you can rent a towel if you forget yours) and charge your phone using the socket near your bunk. Night owls can make use of the reading light, or use the free Wi-Fi for late-night scrolling.

Extras and activities

Help yourself to a free tea, coffee or hot chocolate and head to reception to ask for tips on Edinburgh's pubs. Our staff can also book you on a tour to the Highlands. On lazy mornings, roll downstairs and get our continental breakfast for a small charge. Travelling solo? Grab a paperback from our free book exchange if you're up before everyone else.

This hostel is in a perfect spot - so close to all the bars, restaurants and shops of the old city, and just a few blocks from the train. The staff are lovely and it's a great place to hang out by the fireplace if the weather is gross (as it often is in Edinburgh). Not too noisy, but I was there in the off season.

Great small hostel. Good facilities. Friendly and helpful staff. The mixed dorm was large enough but noisy at night. Windows facing the Royal Mile and lights from shops coming in at night but it didn't bother me much. Earplugs and eye mask a must for me. Room a bit stuffy if windows shut in winter. (I opened them and problem solved) Towel to hire for 50p, decent breakfast for 2 pounds, free coffee tea and cocoa all day long makes this hostel great value for money. I definitely recommend! :)

Great value for money right in the centre of Edinburgh only 5 mins from Edinburgh Waverley. Staff were lovely and cooking facilities great. Only problem (a rather large one) was the music from a pub below going on to the early hours. Obviously this can’t be helped but it was loud.

Cosy hostel, nice vibe, friendly staff, great location! It's not very big, modern or like a party hostel, if you're looking for anything of that, but good to feel like at home in a friendly atmosphere. They do different events every evening so it's easy to socialise and have some fun. Also they organize tours around Scotland's most beautiful places. I really liked that all rooms and beds have names which is quite amusing and gives some character to the hostel! Many thanks to staff! :)

It’s a nice but small place. Looks like a flat, with a front desk, living room, kitchen and I think 10 or less rooms. I stayed in a 10 bed female room. The bedroom was big but beds a bit uncomfortable. I couldn’t sleep well. For £2 you can have breakfast with cereals, milk, bread and fruit. tea or coffee for free! I’ll recommended only because has a very good location!

Nice hostel right in the old city. It felt kind of weird having to show the paper to all the separate staff until they know your face. Otherwise it is very nice. One of the ladies was super nice!

There's only two female showers so you got to be early and be quick. It's not the cleanest so one night was enough. Staff is great but the system is a little annoying where you have to carry the little green ticket around with you.
