Overview

At Summer House Backpackers Brisbane, we're proud of our reputation as one of Australia's best budget hostels. With our funky décor and fun events, we like to make you feel at home. Take a beer from our bar – up to our rooftop terrace. Bask on a lounger surrounded by views over the city and river, and stick around for our evening socials. We'll keep you well fed, with our free pancake Sundays, cheese and cracker nights and Italian nights – and well entertained (don't miss our free boat cruises along the Brisbane River). Grab a continental breakfast every morning – that's free too – naturally!

Location

We're a block away from the Brisbane River waterfront and 7 minutes' walk from the Roma Street Station. This is where the train from the airport, the BDVL, will drop you off – the journey takes about 45 minutes, door to door. There are plenty of cool places to grab a drink just 5 minutes' walk away, with bars like Lefty's Old Time Music Hall, Brewski Bar and Libertine Restaurant a short stroll from the hostel.

Rooms and Dorms

Whether you prefer to keep it cosy or bunk up with new friends, we have mixed dorms of all shapes and sizes. All of our rooms have fresh linen, air con – a must during our hot Aussie summers – and there are power points beside every bed. Bring along a padlock to use your locker, or pick one up from reception.

Extras and activities

Our super fast Wi-Fi is free, so you can stay on top of the shows you're hooked on (help yourself to free and tea and coffee). If you have time for TV, that is – we have heaps of free events to keep you busy. Head to the rooftop for our legendary barbecue dinners, and down to street level for our free walking tours if you need a newbie's introduction to our amazing city.

Had a very enjoyable stay here. Very close in proximity to the beach and to lots of shopping. Solo traveller and made friends fairly easily.

Clean and value for money. Breakfast was basic but all day tea and coffee was great. Rooms are cleaned every day and the staff are lovely. Just a 15min walk to either Southbank or queen street so perfectly placed. Right next to Roma st station too.

The best thing was the air con in the dorm room! It was very comfortable to sleep there. Kitchen was well equipped and not too busy. The area was a bit dull but walking distance to the centre.

Nice place to stay in. The rooms were well ventilated, clean and orderly. The kitchen was clean and well stocked. The staff was very nice and helpful. It’s a shame that the toilets and showers are old, dirty and to be honest pretty disgusting. The shower curtains are full of fungus and the smell is pretty bad.

Not sure why the reviews are so high for this.. rooms are basic, hostel isn’t very social, the kitchen is small. Glad I didn’t stay long

Staff were great, however pretty basic facilities. Was quite hot in the dorm room and only a thick doona and no thin sheet. Bathrooms weren’t very clean and smelled of vomit. Good for a party time but not a long time.

Much better options at very similar prices nearby. Not as good as other summer houses in australia. No BYO but also no bar, one bathroom between very large numbers of guests. Very small kitchen that gets incredibly busy. Checked out and went for YHA - much better.

I stayed in Summerhouse for 3 nights. I arrived on a Sunday and my cards were not working. I asked the staff if i could check-in first and get the money later. But she said the hostel did not allow that. I am lucky that my friend in Brisbane can pay for me. Otherwise i am afraid the staff will not let me stay for the night. The staff needs to be trained for better service and providing more flexibility to guests.

The majority of the people staying there were either working there (and had been for a long time) or were just staying there while they worked in the city which meant it wasn’t very social at all as everyone seemed to either be in a group or just keep themselves to themselves. Hostel itself, in terms of facilities, wasn’t terrible but really wasn’t the best. Overall, would suggest staying somewhere else.
